LAST EDITED ON Dec-03-07 AT 12:55PM (MST)[p]Just returned from my buddy's ranch in Alturas (north-east) California.
Stopped into the local sporting goods store & filmed these nice bucks taken from northern California.
Some are old, but pretty solid bucks.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-03-07 AT 10:21AM (MST)[p]NV,
I'm sure you did.
We fish there quite a bit.
If you do a search on my name in the Campfire forum, you can see a bunch of those fish.
Glad to see ya here at MM.
Sac sure has been weak last couple of years.
Maybe see ya on the river again.

HunterHarry,

Thank you for the picture show. Always like to see Big Calif. bucks either Blackies or mulies. With over a hundred deer taken in a lifetime of continually chasing trophy deer, i have yet to see or get that really monster buck. I've always known that he was just over in the next little draw but i may have zigged when i should have zagged. It's been a grand chase and still excites me very much to this day.

Even though those mounted deer may have been taken years ago, we both know that there are still a few big ones out there and so the hunt continues.

I live in Chester, Ca. You ever get this way, i'd like to meet you.

Nice photos. The shed looks to have 15" bases, or at least huge.
The photo below is of my brothers Kali buck from 1981. We were younger and dumber and forgot to clean the snow off him. He was 6x4.

>Yes. And a dork.

How'd he hit anything with bent barrel on that gun? /wink

LAST EDITED ON Dec-03-07 AT 05:05PM (MST)[p]Boy does that look odd! I think that gives the bullet rise for additional yardage.

Must be an illusion as he still has that rifle and uses it on yotes and speed goats. By the way it was our mom's rifle a 270 win.

Thanks HH for the pics. I've always loved Alturas. I've drawn a couple antelope tags over there. Plus duck and goose hunting is pretty good.

Ransom, what a great photo! I get it now. Your brother shoots the bucks and you shoot the does!:) (campfire forum)

sageadvice, Chester is another of my favorite places. Always stay there while hunting or fishing Almanor. Is there still a sawmill or two over there?

LAST EDITED ON Dec-03-07 AT 09:56PM (MST)[p]Eel, yea, there is Collins Pine. Their still going, running short crews i hear. Chester is a neat place to live. I'm a small time plumbing contractor. Kinda tough place to make a living, winters here are long, cold, and not much work to be had.

I'm renting a small cabin on the edge of town until i can build on a riverfront piece that i bought before the prices went up. I won last years "Make a Wish" Trout tourny, swing a fair fly rod, and generally know where a guy can bank fish on Almanor or Butt Lk. for a nice one or two. Any Monster Mulie's guy's are welcome at my door anytime. Love to talk hunting and fishing.

Google "Almanor fishing Association" then chek their photo's. A Vintage lure collecting friend from Sac. came up for a day to visit and fish. I hired a guide cause of the time limitations and we did pretty good. I'm Joey in the pic's, the big fella. 6'3 385 lol.

Joey, I stopped in Chester last Sept. on my way to WY. I was shocked at how much real estate has gone up.

Almanor is really kicking out some nice fish these days. And now I see on that web site Eagle Lake Trout? Those are pretty special fish. I've caught them in Eagle Lake many years ago. Big time fighters!

Eel

Sorry HH, don't mean to divert your post.

Eel, the prices are going back down now. There's more than a few guy's i work with not gonna get thru winter without losing something.

I got out on the lake with another buddie couple weeks ago. We really hammered the Eagle lakers. Brought 16 to the boat, kept 7 nice ones up to 4 1/2 pounds, and we each lost several, some real nice, hard fighten fish. Can be spottie though and a guy can get skunked easy enough.

I'm hoping to be heading to Wyoming myself next year. I have 2 points for mulies and looks like i'll have a better than average chance to now get drawn. In 2005, a old high school bud and i hired a rancher to pack us and our own gear up top for a 2 week stay west of Pinedale.

I loved it up there but i'm glad to have filled out early. Really rugged country and even though i still get around pretty good, really had no business going some of the places i went. Ended up with a 28" 170 class took at 360 yd. with my .280 ackley. That buck was laid up in a small green patch in some of the most God awful rugged, big boulder, rock slide country imagional.

I'm glad we did this DIY trip, once, but i'm gonna leave that country to younger guys in better condition than i'm likely to be in. Getten older and bigger is the pits. there was a time when i'd go thru country like that, never giving it a second thought. Getting that buck out, i gotta admitt, i was a bit concerned that if i slipped or mis-stepped, might not stop for a long, long ways.

How about you Eel, you been getten your share?

Joey, I'm still looking for a good mule deer myself. I went to WY last year for antelope and met Kilowatt there. I have 2 deer points also. I hear you about that rugged country. I'm not getting any younger either. If I could connect on a 170 buck sometime, I could die happy!:)

I used to duck hunt Almanor a lot with a scull boat. We used to put in on the North side off of Hwy 36. You're right about the cold winters. Sometimes we had to break ice for the first 100 yards to get to open water. Lots of Mallards and Honkers over there. If you hunt it late in the season you better have some tire chains too.

We used to hunt a lake next to Westwood, but I can't think of the name of it right now. (another sign of getting old).

Nice to meet you! Next time I head over that way I'll try to get ahold of you. I'm in Eureka. Maybe we can wet a line!

Steve
