Anyone have any bull photos or info in this unit? I drew a rifle tag and just getting pretty anxious. Can't wait till fall!

Hey Gadjet,

I'v never hunted unit 61 for elk but have hunted unit 62 just across Dave Wood Road. My best suggestion at this point with the lack of responses to your thread is to research the MM archives and use 61 as your key word. It should turn up a helluva lot of info as guys have been asking about unit 61 for several years here on MM. I hope this helps and wish you the best of luck in taking down a big ol' stinky!

Thanks Songdog,

I will check it out. A big ol' stinky is just what I'm looking for. Ha Ha! Just curious, how did you do in 62?

We hunted some private ground in unit 62 many years ago and killed 2 cows and a decent 6 pt. bull. Nothing big but we saw 330+ bulls on some adjacent private land. We never could talk 'em over the fence though... I liked the area but the landowner went up on the trespass fees and since then I've found much better places to hunt. Lots of elk in that country and yes there are some whopper bulls in the vicinity but I suspect they are mostly on private land. Great looking country and hope to go back someday. Good luck in your research and hunt!

All my experience in 61 has been archery and muzzleloader between Deep canyon and the Mesa-Montrose county line. The long ridges north and south of the tongue that extend from the divide road have always been loaded with elk. There are no roads or ATV trails on either ridge. The canyons on both sides have always had lots of elk as well.
Here's a picture from deep canyon 3 years ago first rifle.

Here's the bull I shot last year muzzleloader on the ridge north of the tongue (I wanted a 5 point).

Wow 12point, those are some nice bulls! That's also some great info and I appreciate it. A five point like that would be very hard to pass on. Have you seen many bulls in that area that are that size and up?

No, most of the bulls I saw were smaller. I called in 7 bulls the first morning and one, a 6 point, might have been bigger but he wasn't as heavy and I didn't want a 6 point. I was really looking for a 5 point with long whaletails. Found one but was pretty thin. Saw one 6 point the night before the season started that may have gone 350 or better. In all probably saw 30 or 40 bulls before I shot mine and if any were bigger as in score ,I couldn't tell. I know none were as heavy. Saw several bulls killed and none were as big as mine, but did talk to an archer who had killed one earlier that scored 340.

I have a five point on the wall that is very similar to yours that I killed in the nineties. I've killed several six points since but that five is still my favorite. There's just something about those big fives!
C'mon fall!

LAST EDITED ON Aug-03-14 AT 07:32PM (MST)[p]12point,

I spent the previous weekend in that very area north of the Tongue. Nasty and steep. Did the Boys from the Club bother you much or is that their horse? This weekend was spent in the hole just north of Campbell Point.

BeanMan,
In my travels on this site I think I saw that you have a tag for second season also? I've been looking at the country north of Campell point also. Just trying to guess where some good bulls may end up once they start to leave the cows. Just curious, what is the club?
Good luck on your hunt!

No, I never saw another hunter while hunting, however bowhunters wear camo so I could have walked past some and never seen them. We get our water at Club as I've been friends with the rancher since 1974 and He had only 2 or 3 hunters there. We camped on the Tongue and there was quite a bit of ATV traffic going in and out of that road. The top picture is a friend of mine (back to the camera) from Calif. who guided his friend on the first rifle hunt 3 years ago. The horse is from a pack service who lives in Unaweep Canyon.

12,

That's good news. I'll be hunting second season.

Now seems like a good time to let people know that Austin Massey, owner of Domniguez outfitters, 970-640-9312 will pack your animal out for about $350 according to his sign at the start of the north end of the divide road. (that's his service in 12pts photo)

For guy's like me who are planning on hunting in the steep and nasty that can be a lifesaver. I've talked with several friends who have used his service and were very happy with it.

Garvey Brothers Outfitters will do the same thing on the southern end of the unit, you'll have to check with them for prices etc.
