Pike Peak National Forest

Has anyone ever hunted the Pikes Peak National Forest for elk or muleys with a bow (or easy to draw gun tag)? I am pondering the idea of moving out to CO Springs and have not been able to find to much info on the local hunt quality. I will still do week long hunts as I currently do, but am looking at just quick weekend trips during the times that I cannot travel far. Any help would be appreciated.

I live in Colorado Springs. I don't spend too much time right near town, I usually skip right over it and head farther away from the "busy" area (atvers, hikers and wannabe mountainmen
:)
I have seen some decent (small/young) 4x4's bucks in the area though the few times I'm in there. The sheep hunting is supposedly really good for the state on the backside of pikes peak for big rams? Can't verify from personal experience's though.
You will find that it's really busy north of woodland park for atv's (rainbow falls).

As with any place though, I'm sure if you get away from the road and find some area that is a pain in the A$$ to get to, you will find some quality animals.

I also live in Colorado Springs. I second what Mntman said. I drive 2 to 3 hours away from here to get into good high country deer hunting.

The elk hunting isn't very good except on private land around there, but there are some dang nice deer on the national forest. You will need to study the maps to get away from the private land and all the atv trails, but with a little work, you can hunt close to home for a good buck. Pikes Peak and Rampart Range definately hold some great rams, but your odds won't be good for many years. It's a beautiful place to live, but build up preference points for other parts of the state.

Unit 49 is not far from Colorado Springs and has some really good bulls. Draw only, but not many for a resident.

a lot of dirt bikes and atv use qiute a few hikers and a lot of Denver and Colorado springs hunters.

If you were willing to do some home work and spend a few years hunting it. You might come out a winner but as stated prior there are many better units to hunt.

Same as everyone else. Great place to live and hunt if you do your homework. Elk and deer are huntable within an hour of Colorado Springs. You're better off hunting a few hours away though. There are some great deer near Colorado Springs just not in the numbers you can find deer in the other areas of the state. Elk are mostly on private land but there are a few spots where you can hunt them on public land. Don't count on shooting any elk over 300" if you want to hunt close to the city. Send a PM if you have anymore questions or need any assistance with the housing market here.
