LAST EDITED ON Sep-16-14 AT 04:44PM (MST)[p]The opening of the much awaited Limited Entry hunt was here. We had put in our time scouting almost every weekend for the past month and a half. We set up where we had seen a nice bull on Friday morning thinking that would be the spot to be after monitoring the elk throughout the day Friday, but it was dead quiet Saturday morning. We saw a couple of elk here and there where they were Friday but all the bugling and most of the activity had moved to a completely different mountain. Although we worked our way towards where we were seeing all the elk, it had gotten later in the morning so we went back to our home base for the traditional "Hunting Brunch" put on by our wonderful wives and families.

We re-set the game plan for the evening hunt to get the hunter, my brother, down on the mountain where the elk seemed to be that morning. After about an hour hike, we got to where we wanted to be. Little did we know how perfect our timing would turn out to be. We had spotters on some other hills to help us know what was going on in the various spots throughout the mountain. As we got to our first spot, there wasn't anything going on. Our friends told us there were some elk meandering around on the hillside beneath us but no big bulls worth pursuing. They had us go to a couple different spots to see if we would be able to get a good vantage point on some other openings on the hill when all of the sudden we were being told to RUN to the next clearing and that we needed to "shoot that bull immediately!"

I took off running with my brother. I had a radio in my hand, but had told him to keep his off in case we needed it later if my battery got low. As i was running, apparently he didn't understand the urgency that I was getting over the radio since I keep my volume low and hold it to my ear (if I'm not wearing a headphone). I thought he was right with me, but I turned around to talk to him and he was 50 yards behind me. I started swinging my arm aggressively towards him to convey as much haste as I could without making any noise and he quickly caught up. I asked my friend over the radio, "How big is he?" to which he responded, "don't ask, just shoot!"

As we're about half way through the trees that separate the two clearings, I see elk walking straight at us, but I didn't immediately see a bull. As I lifted my binoculars, I saw him behind the cows, my view was obstructed by his harem. I could tell he was a nice bull so it had to be the one my friend was talking about. I didn't have a lot of time to study him though since they would eventually bust us. At this point, we could see the elk and the trees weren't thick enough to keep us hidden much longer so he set up for a shot across the top of a fallen quakie. I had forgotten my range finder for the evening hunt but I figured they were somewhere about 150 yards or so when the elk sort of stopped and separated from the line they were walking in. The bull was now standing by himself and took a turn to his left for a good shot opportunity.

I said "Shoot!" and hear Kaboooom. The bull looked like he sort of hunched up but didn't do anything else other than turn even more broadside so I yelled "Shoot Again!" This time I hear Kaboooom and the unmistakeable Whuuaaaap as the bullet connected with something solid. The bull dropped in his tracks.

We made our way down to where he lay and we can hear our family and friends screaming from across the canyon. Our dad and younger brother and our good friends all got to see the whole thing unfold from different hills through their spotting scopes. There's nothing better than being in the hills with people you love and all getting to be a part of a hunt.

We got to inspecting him and he's a gorgeous bull. His fronts all turn up and are polished, his whale tails seem to keep on going. He's just as pretty as they come and we're super happy with him. See for yourself below.

Although our hunt was quick and we would have loved to have had a few more days chasing the bulls and the anticipation that comes with it, we're really happy my brother was able to harvest such a quality bull and wouldn't change a thing. Congratulations Russ! I'm super excited for you and your awesome bull.

We were looking at some scouting pictures and we think we've got some pictures of him from two weeks before the hunt to add to the memories. It's hard to tell for sure though because we never got a side view of him.

Very nice bull!

I dont mean to stir up anything and hope this isn't construed as trying to be critical, but do you or anyone else here know what the law is when it comes to using radios for game location? I've thought about bringing my radios up to use for this purpose, but for some reason I swear I remember someone telling me its a no no. Hope I'm wrong though!

LAST EDITED ON Sep-16-14 AT 05:52PM (MST)[p]I believe that only applies to the record books. You worried me into checking and there's nothing about it in the Utah regulations that I could see.

I think that only pertains to entering them in "the book". Great story and a stud of a bull! Glad you had the family with you.

First of all... That is an amazing bull. I love how perfectly typical he is and those polished tips are awesome... Thanks for sharing pics and the story with us all. I kept thinking in your story, "Oh no, he's shooting the wrong bull..!" But I'm glad this wasn't one of those stories...

:) :)

Secondly, in regards to radios... Are you guys telling me that all those bulls and bucks killed by Mossback aren't eligible for "The Book"..?? Those guys are always on the radio in their videos, sometimes with headsets and such... But I'm pretty sure the animals their clients kill get into the book... I mean, Spidey is #1 right..??

LAST EDITED ON Sep-17-14 AT 11:59AM (MST)[p]We've been fortunate. Our hunting party (my family and one other family) had 2 tags in 2010, a tag in 2011 that we turned in because of some health issues my dad had so he got the tag back in 2012, my brother and I both drew in 2013 but he turned his in so we'd only have 1 hunt, my friends father in law drew the late tag for 2013, and my brother hunted this year. We should have another tag for 2015.

My brother and I were only putting in for points when my dad should have drawn so he'd have his own hunt, but that ended up putting us back 2 years for me and 3 for my brother since my dad turned his in in 2011.

I'll make a new thread with pics of all our bulls from the hunts later.

"Although our hunt was quick and we would have loved to have had a few more days "chasing" the bulls and the anticipation that comes with it, we're really happy my brother was able to harvest such a quality bull and wouldn't change a thing"

Really? Congrats to your group for turing "Hunting into Chasing" because that's exactly what it was. Thank you so much for giving the hard working "hunter" a bad name. Your precisely why the game and fish has to keep making laws and regulations from preventing this garbage. You should of just launched a plane or a drone to give you the gps coordinates. sure hope there wasn't a "hunter" that worked his ass off to get into that bull just to have the radio gang come thundering in to shoot him out from some one who actually worked for him.

Wow Crash you having a bad day? What garbage are you referring too? What laws and regulations have been put in place to avoid said garbage? Please share. Or, don't.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-17-14 AT 02:17PM (MST)[p]Im gonna have to concur with Crash-----sure doesnt seem like fair chase with all those radios posted all over the mountain. I had a wasatch le archery tag and didnt even hear a bull until the last 2 days of the season---hiked my ax off to get to em only to find 2 small 5 pts. Wasnt gonna pack it out that far by myself so they are still roaming the treelines. I have a hard time understanding why the rifle/muzzy guys get the rut also. Guess its time to lay down the bow and start putting in for a muzzy/rifle tag then round up as many people as I can to make a radio net.

Gonna add this---is it really an accomplishment if all ya did was pull the trigger?

LAST EDITED ON Sep-17-14 AT 03:15PM (MST)[p]Wow, that went downhill fast. Thanks for making it enjoyable and adding to the experience. If your sour over not getting a bull on the archery then fine, but don't try to tear down our hunt. We don't need to justify anything to you. Stop reading posts on elk hunting during the rifle season if you don't want to hear about it.

What positive things have you accomplished or could you have even been trying to accomplish with your post?

Hiblee if you only saw two small 5 points in the several weeks you had to hunt on the archery hunt, you must have been doing something VERY wrong.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-17-14 AT 03:33PM (MST)[p]Sweet bull!!!!

I didnt say that was all I saw----just once the talkin started a bit on my last day. I saw 2 herds of about 40, a nice 6x6, a cougar, 9 coyotes, 6 bucks, a thousand dam does, and a couple of rabbits-----Ha. Also saw, hail, rain, snow, rain, hail, lightning, hail, rain, hail then sun on the last day. Im absolutely fine with not killing anything, just like to be in the woods.

NOt sour----to each his own. I've killed 3 dandy bulls in 26yrs of hunting and each was accomplished on my own. I think thats more impressive than the antler score. Just my opinion, and mine's just different from yours (no big deal).
Oh---and I didnt know it was Rifle hunting until after I read "kaboom"--sorry.

I just don't understand the purpose of any of your comments. The only thing it could be for is to try to make yourself out to be a "real hunter" whatever that may be.

Do you know what he wanted out of the hunt? Do you know what he/we put into the hunt? Your comments are very presumptive in thinking that he just went up there and pulled the trigger. This hunt was a two month journey with family and friends in the hills. It's far more than killing an elk.

I tried to post a story for my brother to have something to share with others who enjoy the outdoors and a couple of you have to go turn it into a measuring contest.

Whatever bud, like i said, just my opinion. Don't like it, don't respond to it. Obviously B&C doesn't think the radio hunt is fair chase either.

I believe guiding hunters to game via electronic communication is illegal in Colorado.

The mountains, not the hills.

Don't listen to a couple of Jack Wagons giving you a hard time SatchSquatch... "haters gonna hate" is a phrase that comes to mind...

You guys did amazing and involving your family is most of the fun. That's a stud bull and a stud photo of you all..!!

Also, anyone who says "I don't care I didn't kill anything, I just love being in the hills" after eating tag soup in an LE unit that carries trophy animals is just foolin themselves. You can get out into the hills every single year with a bow and go after spikes and cows, or frankly, after nothing. You put in for LE units for an opportunity to harvest a trophy. Just admit it's disappointing you didn't get one... And don't hate on those who do get them just because they got it by different means than you would have.

Why don't you heed your own advice? Don't like it, don't respond to it.

Congrats on another great Wasatch bull. It has been fun to read the stories your family has posted over the last four years of hunting the Wasatch. It must be awesome to be able learn an LE area like it is a general season tag. I'm the only one in my family that puts in for elk (sitting at 15 points). I'd love nothing more than to have a dad and brothers with near max points to be able to string a few years together helping each other on an LE unit. Consider yourselves blessed for the unique opportunity no many get.

Love the fronts on your brothers bull.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-18-14 AT 08:34AM (MST)[p]Cool story. Awesome bull. Congrats!!!!!

Hillbe or whatever your name is......chill out. I'm seeing less and less people post stories and pics because of people acting like you. Quit being so critical. You know the season dates and the odds in the spring. If you want to show your elk that you have killed in the past.... Then start your own thread and we would all love to see.

It's a family affair, a great time to be had......you can go buy a Montana elk tag that started 2 weeks ago and hunt with a bow till the second week of oct. I'll even draw you a map where to go. Utah is the way it is so get over it!!

"That's a special feeling, Lloyd"

Great bull, love the fronts on him. Nice job and great looking team helping you out on the hunt.

Congrats on the great bull!! Sounds like an amazing hunt and memories to last a lifetime.

The use of radios is perfectly legal and I wouldn't let others take anything away from your hunt for it!

I just wanted to apologize for bringing up the radio thing. I didn't think it would have had such a negative impact on your post. Great bull and glad u enjoyed the hunt.

Sweet bull! Loved the story, write up, and photos. Pay no mind to the haters. Haters gonna hate. It's just jealousy and compensating for their small manhood.
I'm excited and jealous of your group. I drew my tag last year and had a great time. We are still waiting for my dad to draw. When he does, oh baby!
