im looking to do a week long genral .season hunt next year in idaho i will be backpacking. im am looking for a 190 gross buck or bust.i know it is possible. i have a few ideas on places to go and would like to know if anybody can give me any info on the areas and advice on where to go for the best odds on a places that i could best be able to achive my goal .the places that ive been looking at on maps are the meade peak area in southeast idaho, elkhorn peak in unit 73, the trintys , the deepcreek range, and stumppeak area.

Well, I can see you've got the confidence issue whupped, thats half the battle. Bucks like you described do exist in some general units in the Great Gem State, But getting one on your first blind trip would be a stroke of luck akin to winning the lottery..... you do a general unit backpack hunt in Idaho and pass anything 170" or better, you're either too hard-core for you're own good or dillusional...One mans opinion. good luck.

Ha Ha Ha Ha! He is so funny!

But seriously, if I knew where to find a 190 buck, don't you think I would be hunting it?

This is my post

I've just pissed in my pants.......and nobody can do anything about it.

190 huh? That means you are looking for something that is close to a book buck. Well, you should propably stay out of unit 73 then. If you look at the record book most of the book heads come out of the upper snake region units 66,69. These are tough hunts but the 240" buck that was shot out of one of these units needed somewhere to grow old. So put your hiking boots on and good luck. Watch the regs for big changes this year.

Jimbo,
I've hunted the Meade Peak area in the past. Beautiful country! Looks like a good place to find a monster buck. Have only seen one big buck up there, in 2001, I believe. He was a 29-30" wide 4X4. Probably a 180" class buck. My biggest, from that area is a 25" 4X4 in 2005. Havn't been back since. We use SE Idaho as our backup plan, if we need another hunt. Good luck! A 190" buck is going to be a tall order to fill anywhere, for sure in Idaho on a general tag.

Not too say that it can not be done, because it can. But trying to find a 190" buck will take alot of prescouting and then hope that somebody else isn't after the same buck, because it is a general unit and there are masses of people everywhere. I hunted the meadepeak area in 2004 and backpacked in expecting to get away from the people, opening morning I glass 16 different hunters who were all doing the same thing I was. The biggest buck I say was a 25" 4x5, maybe 160". There are giants around but you will have to work for them. Good luck.

I live in Idaho and have lifetime license number 43. Over the years, I've caught some of those big ones; even two in the last two years. I do agree with everything these guys have said about work....and then double what they've suggested.

That being said, there are no big deer in the limited-entry units, except those that came down from up high when the snow comes. The up-high units are general season. Figure where the summer (or transition) range is, scout and good luck.

Set your goals high stay with it and spend lots of time in the field.
Good luck and post some pics when you have them on the ground.
They are there.
