Question for Colo boys!

My 72yr.old father is sitting on 12 deer points in Colorado and because of his declining physical state I am afraid we cant wait any longer to cash in his points on a hunt. Its an either now or never situation. Would any of you Colo boys be willing to give me any ideas of some units where a person stands a good chance at a trophy buck with limited mobility(1-2mi. per day) based on 12 points? At this point I would even consider an outfitter/ranch hunt if necessary. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks-Widetrack

Talk with or check out "cassidyoutfitters.com" they have some awesome leases in SE Colorado. The Plains are an easy hunt for anyone. Jack and Chris are good guys. You want to be on a hunt that Jack, Chris, or Corey are on.

The plains are good, but I wouldn't want to burn 12 points there as most of those units don't take many. I would definitely look into the Gunnison units, though with 12, assuming he's a nonresident, he'll need at least that. Consider the units north of GJ along the Utah border as well. Those areas are good for someone who can't move around much, because there are plenty of roads.

I have a question for you Colorado boys too.....what the heck has happened to my Bronco's, and how do we pull out of this slump for next year???

To answer the broncos question, I would
have to say they need a whole new
defensive line, last year they were
good, this year they suck!

Maybe the Broncos are point saving too! It may be time for them to use their points as well. Question is, Should they go "do it yourself" or guided? LOL - widetrack

This past year, most definetely guided!

I'll bet Doyle and his boys could figure it out...
Shanahan should turn over the reins to Mossback; he'd have them in the SuperBowl in two years.

By the way,
I live in UT.
There are a lot of UTARDS that live here.
I have also seen quite a few WYOMORONS, NEVADUHNS, COLORADORKS, ID-IOTS and AIRHEADZONANS in my travels.

Let's get back to hunting............

I am saving my points to go back to GMU 21. I shot a fairly nice buck there in the 2005 2nd rifle season. It took me three points as resident to draw the tag. If I was your dad, I would put in for the third season because you have a better chance of hitting the rut, and there are less tags available (= less hunters). For a non-resident to draw that tag (DM02103R) in the 2006 season it took nine points to draw it for sure. They only had 51 tags available so it is a pretty tough draw for out-of-staters.

What makes GMU 21 so good for your dad is the ease of access from the road. The DOW even tells you the best way to hunt that unit is to drive the numerous roads in the area that lead to the gas wells. 90% of the land is BLM and there is abundant access.

Here are some photos I took at the game processor in Rangely. This was only three days into the season.......

These were just some of the racks they had cut off by the third day of the season:

This big boy wasn't extremely wide, but he had real nice deep forks, awesome eye guards, & he was fairly symmetrical:

This is the buck I took on the second day. I just couldn't pass him up:

WT Jack,

Consider Unit 142 (eastern plains) where the Army's Pinion Canyon Manuver Site is located. For a $25 fee, you can hunt most of the area, unless closed, and the access is good for vehicles. I think 12 points will get you in. Monster bucks out there, probably one of the top three units in the state for quality bucks. Open, canyonlands country with good visiblility.

Unit 10 is a great trophy buck unit but access is more limited on public lands where some of it is roadless. Tougher hunt.

Good Luck!

Go to Unit 21 during the 3rd season. Very easy hunt for a physically challenged hunter. Lots of public land and many gas roads plus you can stay in a motel in Rangely. Just drive around until you find the right deer. The deer are used to seeing the gas workers in the area, so they don't get too spooked from hunters. Here's a picture of my 2006 Unit 21 buck.

I have heard the quality in Pinon Canyon has really declined in the past years. Very neat country though. Im sure there are some really nice bucks in it still but much harder to find them now.

cobowhunter,

Did you see cow elk using this method?

My dad is getting up there in age and his hill-climbing days are about over with the heart medicine he takes. Still, I would like to get him out on a low-stress cow elk hunt.

The season we hunted, there weren't any elk in the areas that were holding deer. The most southern portion of GMU 21 is the place that was holding the elk. The terrain there is not suited to driving and spotting elk. It's an area where you have to get out and hike. Lots of steep mountains - definitely need to be in good shape for that area.

I agree with TennVol, the elk are in the Southern part of the unit closer to Douglas Pass.

A buddy of mine bowhunts pinon canyon every other year. The quality is still there, but the numbers seem to be low. According to the biologist the rifle hunters killed some whoppers but dealing with the army letting you hunt is a pain in the arse. Right now, Ft. Carson is doing better I think.

If I read the CDOW web site correctly, it now takes 8 points to draw that thrid rifle tag as a resident and 12 as a non-res.
