thinkin about putting in for a cwmu instead of waiting 5 more years to draw the book cliffs. i have 3 pts. now. can any body help point me in the right direction? which units have you guys hunted? what did you see? how many days did the operater let you hunt? could you do any scouting? any thing would help thanx in advance for any help

I'd call some operators and ask questions. There are a lot of choices, but not all CWMU's are equal! With 3 points, on a quality CWMU, you may still have a while before you draw.

I work on a few of the top notch CWMU's in the state, but you'll need max points or very close to get on. (Deseret, hell canyon, two bear, promontory)

And personally, i'd not waste points on the books after what i saw this year....i'd do a good CWMU any day!

Best bet is to contact the operators prior to applying, and as mentioned above. most do not let you scout.

There are a few really good CWMUs which will let you on to become familiar with the ranch and scout a day or two in July/August. I'll let you do the leg work to find them.

As for 3 points and the Books. I also have 3 points and figure I can draw that hunt in about 15 years. Right now 8 points gets you a tag, but when we have 8 points it could take 12+. There are better CWMUs than the Books, which take less points to draw. The new CWMU changes for 2009 will help the public hunter also.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-26-07 AT 02:42PM (MST)[p] i appreciate the replies to my question so far. have any of you hunted on a CWMU before? how many days at a time? how were the owners to deal with? huntinco i have 3 pts. for deer

Currently, there are no set number of days a CWMU must allow public hunters to hunt. Some CWMUs only gave 1 day for antlerless and as low as 2 days for antlered. Most offer 3-5 days, while some offer much more.

In 2009 the management plan for each CWMU should be online, which can help hunters become familiar with what the unit is managed for. Also, public hunters will have a minimum of 5 days to hunt. Public hunters will also be able to hunt the Nov. hunt (if the CWMU manages for a Nov hunt). A public hunter will also have complete access to all open areas within a CWMU. These changes won't really have an effect on the good CWMUs which are allowing comparable opportunity, but it will help deal with CWMUs which have not been so inclined.

I have hunted some great CWMUs with others (as I never have had a CWMU tag). Some operators gave 7 days. Some allowed us to return at a later date in attempt to harvest. I felt all gave honest assessment of their CWMU. BUT, there are many different qualities of CWMUs. Some are just shooting 2 year old 3 and 4 points.

I've never had a real bad experience on a CWMU-either from a draw tag, or from a tag I've purchased, but I've always took the time to contact the operators to get the scoop on how things work.

For the draw odds, there are a lot of great CWMUs out there.

Packout, the things you're talking about a good. Honestly most of the CWMUs I've dealt with treat the public hunters as good, if not better than the paying clients, but I realize this isn't always the case.

I've always agreed that public hunters should have the option to hunt in November if a unit has an extension.

Going along with those thoughts, I feel there are several CWMUs that should have to allow the public hunters Sept. first dates if that's what they want.

I won't name any units but several units don't allow the public to hunt during the "velvet" season. Yet other CWMUs with November extensions are required to let public hunters in during the "rut." That doesn't seem very fair to the public or the other CWMUs.

This is an issue that should be looked at.

Its always been a struggle to keep everyone happy with the cwmu's. Keep in mind that most hunters would never set foot on some of these private land units if it wasn't for the cwmu program. Do your home work and Good luck in the draw.

Most CWMU's use outfitting operations and allow those "clients" to hunt the properties first, but not always.
Some properties allow the public hunters to go in the middle of the season, between the early & late hunts that the paying clients use. Not all CWMU's are ran equally, but maybe with this new guidline things will change to more benefit the public hunters.
I'm all for CWMU's, they are great places to hunt without public pressure and generally have excellent opportunities to harvest "trophy class" animals.

WOW!!! iam so pumped talked to several operators and have narrowed it down to 2. 1 of them is closer to home.this will be my last question on this topic.would you guys rather get in as soon as possible, before the deer have been picked over by other hunters? or do you feel the late hunt is just as good?
thanx again

slcmuley-
I have seen it go both ways before.
Sometimes the hunting is better on the late hunt even if hunters have already taken a few good ones earlier.
Weather plays a big part on that early hunt....IMHO.

Let me know if i can help you anymore scl, and good luck!!

Good luck in your search & it sounds like your on the right track. Just remember, just like booking a hunt don't have unrealistic expectations and you will do fine.
