hey hope everyone's hunts are being a success. Mine not so well. I decided to get a spike tag for me and my son and we are planning on going to strawberry area. Looking for any information that will help in achieving a successful hunt for my son. It's his first years i really don't care about killing for my self but really want to see my son get one.

Have you done any scouting? That would be the first step in assuring a successful hunt.

I have done quite a bit of scouting over in the indian creek area but haven't seen much over there. Is there a better area that would give my son better success.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-29-14 AT 03:43PM (MST)[p]If you can't find elk on the Wasatch you might wanna take up knitting. In all seriousness, get up early stay out late and glass. There are elk in nearly every drainage in the Wasatch. Good luck
Don't make it about the kill with your son. Scouting and hunting is what's it's about. Killing is icing on top. Enjoy the process!

Horsecreek is right, finding elk should be a no brainer.....anyone with a pair of bino's and a couple of evenings/mornings will see elk.

That being said, there is a reason why spike success rates are in the 25-35% range, its not an easy hunt. Have fun, hunt and enjoy the experience with your son, but don't give him or yourself unrealistic expectations. You'll see elk and be around them but finding one that you can shoot and then getting yourself in position to shoot is a whole nother ball game

i plan on making it fun, but he is wanting to hopefully get a chance at a spike.

Get where you can see a lot of country on opening morning. Elk will be running all over once somebody cracks the whip. It will be a race to the spikes. After opener they are hard to come by.

I have a cow tag and I have seen nothing but huge bulls. Good glass early morning is what is needed get to a vantage point before the sun rises!

I hunt over on the indian creek side, havent seen much over there. I have a elk control permit so i will be hunting for a cow elk at the latter part of october.

The elk will be getting pushed all over the place on the opener, so I'd get into the middle of a canyon and hope they run by.
