So my 65 year old dad drew the late season hunt this year. Been out there scouting a lot and not seeing much just wondering if anyone knows what has happened out there . I had the tag in 2010 and elk were everywhere now can't hardly find them. Just looking for a tip on where to look . Also anyone have any luck this year out there? Pics? Thanks for the help.

Hunted it last year didn't see a lot of bulls. Only first thing in the morning. From what I have been told the unit has been hunted very hard the last few years.

Nothing has "happened" out there, that herd is bigger and healthier than it's ever been.

I would have to disagree. I have spent a lot of time out there from 2010 till now and with the increase in tag numbers since then I can't see how that wouldn't effect the herd in a negative way.

I've been very involved in managing, grooming and growing that herd for the last 15 years and it's numbers are higher and healthier now more than ever. Just because one year feels different or more challenging than a previous year does not mean it's quality is worse. That herd is up to approximately 1000 animals now which is double what it was 7 years ago.

I've been there during the bugle season 4 yrs in a row and it is nothing like it was in 2010. On my 2010 hunt there were elk everywhere u looked and you didn't even have to look on the res. either the elk are staying on the res or have gone completely nocturnal.

I've spent many years on the Rez side helping make it what is is now. Yes some years the elk seem to stay more inside the Rez, but there are no fences keeping them there. They will simply go where there is better habitat and safety. Yes the state side has issued more tags, but the rez has not. As long as the rez side keeps doing what they've been doing, the state side will always have elk no matter what. The issue is, more state tags obviously brings more human pressure and the elk get smarter with their habits. That part may just be theory, but the numbers of elk increase is fact.

Well that is good to hear. I'm glad the numbers are increasing. Do you have any suggestions for me for the late hunt? How can I get more involved in what happens out there?
