Wyoming Question

I hope this is not a dumb question and I didn't just miss it when reading the regulations but I noticed that for the non resident general season deer hunt it list the season opening date but does not list the day which the hunt closes. Does somebody know where I could find that or do they release them later. I'm new to the whole Wyoming thing so any info would be great..

It goes by unit/Region.. kinda confusing... alot of the western side of the state units have rifle openeing dates of Sept 15th. and you can still bow hunt but with some blaze requirements...kinda goofy for the Gen tag elk hunters that are wanting to bow elk and have rifle hunters blasting away at deer.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-04-08 AT 06:41AM (MST)[p]Usually they run for about 30 days ,but not always.I usually like to hunt the last week of the season to get closer to the rut,I took my biggest bucks the last week of the season.
The G&F will set the closing dates by the time the license draw is done.

The G&F makes a map for each species after the May season-setting meeting that includes opening and closing dates along with other info like the total number of licenses in each area. You might be able to call Wyo G&F to get one of those maps (2007 version). But the closing dates could change from year-to-year and won't be known until after the May meeting.

Some areas like the Black Hills are open for a month. Others for as little as 10 days to 2 weeks. You won't know unless you get that map.

Sorry I am not more help, but that's the way the Wyoming system works. Good luck in 08.

Maybe a dumb question but figured I'd tack it on anyway. Having never hunted regions G or H before, do you guys thinks a horse or mule is necessary to be successful? (deer hunt)

No horses needed. You can get in farther and be fresher when you get in with horses. But big bucks are killed every year fairly close to the roads. We have backpack hunted it a couple of times with success. I don't think that we have ever been more than three miles from the truck. Steep and rugged country is the key. Get away from most of the people and you should do fine.

Thanks for the info. What has been the average length of the seasons of region G and K if anybody knows or has any idea?

I think if you search this W.S. §23‑1‑302, §23‑1‑703 and §23‑2‑104. on the game and fish website you will get to 07 dates of seasons. I have the file downloaded but it is too much to post here. I tried a cut and paste for G but it was FUBAR so I didn't post it.

My $.02 on horses is that I wish I could find someone to do meat hauls at a reasonable price so all I had to pack out off the mountain was my camp. If you do your own wrangling it is a trip up and down on the horse EACH day as you have to water them. Lamas and goats are an option. I've considered goats as they will supposedly pack about 40 pounds and need watered only about every 3 days. If you go high and camp for a week you can stay in pretty good shape but when you have to bone out and haul the deer and camp in one trip. WHEW !!!!! It will be a 100# trip most times. That is a lot even in good shape if you travel from the East and have to get used to the altitude but if you are staying up high and no signs of mountain sickness after 4 or so days of hunting it isn't as bad. It is a younger mans game. At 51 I have to take it slower these days.

You can hunt G or H by foot or horse! I am partial to horses and would never go any other way. However, lots of guys kill big bucks on foot!

Very memorable hunts up in H!
