Utah Deer Hunt Suggestions

My son has one preference point going into this years general season hunt drawing. Last year he drew a doe permit and was successful on his first big game animal in three years of hunting. This year he wants to go after a buck, again. I already have some ideas on where to take him but, most of the places I like to hunt are more remote and rugged and away from most other hunters. My son does not have the same desire I do to hike hard early in the morning and be set when the sun comes up and he does not want to go back where I've taken him before. I will not be hunting, that way I can go at his speed and not push him to go over just one more ridge. I know we'll make it a good experience no matter what, by just spending time together in the hills. Just hope he will get an opportunity to be successful.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you are a resident with one preference point he will draw any tag. There is about a 1% he might not draw the Southern Region tag, but its never been the case yet that one preference point doesn't draw that unit.

If you are a non-resident, its a whole nother story.

We're Utards and I figured he would likely be able to draw any region. That's the reason for getting a point last year. I know the southern region gets a lot of attention, sometimes over rated compared to the other regions but, from what I understand there are some very good places to hunt down there. I'm just not familiar with the South or Southeast like I am with the North or Northeast.

southeastern I feel has a better shot with less effort on a better buck than southern!

what are his expectations?what are your expectations? do you want to hunt close to home?how many days do you want to hunt?i think where you may want to take him into remote areas thers a batter chance of mature bucks.is he willing to sacrifice this for an easier hunt?i'm taking my kid out for her first time this year.she has been along on a few hunts with me.she is really excited.kinda reminds me of myself years ago.talkin about takin the biggest heads on the mountain.she is determined to harvest a buck and a bull this year.sure is fun.we will be returning to the coveted NE region.trying to prepare her for what might be. she is 12.
