Colorado Gunnison Basin Winter

I went over to the basin yesterday. It does not look good. Folks in town said that nobody is doing any feeding for the deer just yet. They say they are thinking about starting. The deer appear to be in good shape right now. Give them another month of this and things might change. The deer seem to be eating the tops of sage brush. When the deer lay down all you can see is there heads. Alot of the deer were laying down which tells me they aren't starving. I will say that people need to be hunting alot of coyotes because the deer can't move very well at all. They are easy targets for predators. One buck tried to move and he had to jump through the snow. The snow seemed to be about 20 inches deep. Deer are the ultimate survivalist they will be where they can find some food. A lot of the deer were laying on the wind swept hillsides where the snow is not as deep.

I saw a low flying helicopter yesterday afternoon. It was making passes up and down the river north of town. I expect feeding will start in a day or two.

I hope they do start feeding soon. It would really help. When that snow thaws a little and freezes the deer and antelope are going to have a really tough time getting through the crust. Keep us all posted. A couple of my friends have enough points to draw a sheep tag so we might be over there looking for some sheep to see what is in that area.

If the heavy snow wasn't enough, the sheep have been hit with a pneumonia outbreak too. 18 have died in the last few weeks.
