i understand co. is having a bad winter in the gunnison basin.what is a bad winter in ut.?when was our last bad winter? it seems to me that the snow keeps coming in.but the ski resorts still have average bases.what do you watch for?is february the worst month for winter kill?

In NE Utah, I don't remember this much snow. Of course my memory's not that great. I know it's been at least 15 years since snowfall like this. I hear from workers in the area that the snow in the Book Cliffs is up to the deer's bellies. I'd guess that not many fawns are going to make it out there this year.

The last really bad Utah winter kill was 92-93. In January of 93 it snowed and snowed. In February it went to sub zero for over 15 days in a row. I remember walking around my yard in Utah County and not breaking through the snow.

KTG/ where abouts in NE utah if you dont mind me asking. this is my coveted hunting region.i've only been looking at wintering deer/elk close to SLC.last weekend i found myself near Manti watching some deer up to their bellies in snow. they seemed to get around ok, but was concerned if the snow got any deeper the tops of the sagebrush would be completely buried

LAST EDITED ON Jan-13-08 AT 09:06PM (MST)[p]I went about 1/2 way up the face of Taylor Mtn on Saturday. The snow in places was about 4" above my knees and we saw zero deer. I've heard of as much as 40" south of Vernal from oilfield workers.

ktg, there is more snow than usual out in the books, been out there quite a bit. just today as a matter of fact. But the snow has settled quite a bit and some of the south sides are starting to burn off. deer acually look pretty good. hope we don't get too much more snow though, cause I don't think it would take much to put them in a bind.

That's good to hear. I know of places out there with 10' tall sagebrush so hopefully they'll all make it.
