In need of a hunting partner, or advice

This has been a difficult month trying to decide on which are in Wyoming to apply. I had max points and haven't drawn an elk tag there since I started applying fifteen years ago. So this year, I looked over all of the units the best I could, and in the end, I went with unit 62. Problem for me is the grizzly situation. Grizzlies have my utmost respect and though I don't mind hunting around them, I am concerned with hunting, or rather camping, in an area that has them while I am alone. I have lot's of ideas about how to combat this problem and if I do draw, I plan to hone these ideas to a point where I am comfortable while I am hunting.

In the meantime, I thought I would simply take a chance and see if anyone might be interested in going in together. I am certain that I am not the only person who has applied in this unit with no one willing, or able, to tag along. So, I thought I would start by asking here. If you think you will draw the tag and will be alone, or if you wouldn't mind sharing camp with me, please let me know. Obviously you can post here, or you can send a pm and I will forward my email address.

Regardless of whether anyone wants to take me up on this, any advice concerning hunting in that unit, or hunting around bears would be greatly appreciated.

That actually crossed my mind, however, from all the information I have, it appears that it will take max, or very close to max - within a point or so - to draw the hunt. So doing so, I don't think would help anyone - myself or another person involved - as most likely if we averaged less than max, we probably wouldn't draw anyway.

Im still trying to make a plan as I believe I have until tomorrow to make any last changes. I REALLY want to do the hunt, but I don't think I can hunt it appropriately alone. As far as that goes, I would probably consider paying someones way, or even paying a local, just to keep me company. I don't necessarily need a guide, just someone that can shoot a bear off of me, should the need arise.

Tomorrow is the change date.

My plan for that unit was to buy a bear fence but it has since become a max point unit.

Todd, have you considered going with a guide or putting in for another high quality unit with no grizzlies?

Good suggestion, but I can't afford a guide. Technically, I probably could, but if I did I would have to hunt out of state only once every couple years, rather than two or three times each year.

As far as choosing another unit, that is what I ended up doing, but the odds are so low, I doubt I will draw - which is part of why I had spread out my search for the "perfect" unit. However, it seems as though, there is no "perfect" unit.

Thanks again, and if I don't draw this year, I will just try again next year, and will definitely start a bit earlier to try to find a hunting partner for a grizz unit.

Todd,

Not sure if you remember me or not, but I provided you some info with your last WY antelope hunt. As luck would have it I drew a tag and hunted 62 last year. I'm not sure if this is a grizzly track or not, but it was large. I will admit that hunting in grizzly country was a bit unnerving, and changed the way we hunted, cooked, ate, etc. I also think it added a bit of excitement to the hunt to be honest. I never did see one, but I found this track on top of mine when I returned to camp in the evening. It had followed my tracks, or at least used the same trail I was on for about 200 yards.

Todd,

This unit is beautiful, but it is steep steep steep! It is a must to be in great shape, at least to hunt it effectively. I was actually a bit disappointed in the amount of elk I seen saw. I probably saw 5 bulls in 9 days. I was also surprised at the amount of people driving around for such a limited area, but it was easy to get away from people. I can only speak for a small portion of the unit as I concentrated on the area around my camp. If you ever get the tag I will be happy to give you all the info I have.

Todd,

I applied for 62 for years before Wy went to PPs, and a couple of times after. I have horses and 62 has little wilderness so it seemed to be the perfect unit and the biologist I talked to 12-13 years ago was really helpful.

All that said, I haven't applied there in 5-6 years just because of the grizz. Can't see hunting with a bow in grizz country. Plus I'd be worried about the stock as well.

Just mentioned this so you know others feel as you do.
