This was in the Denver Post today:

Colorado has convinced the feds to shut down all public access on the critical winter ranges during this crisis. IMO this move should've happened 4 weeks ago, but at least the agencies are recognizing a problem and cooperating to do something about it. Regarding some other threads, I'm sorry for you guys in Utah and the lack of cooperation and willingness to protect the herds by your state agency. Hat's off to Colorado for trying to protect a world class resource.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-30-08 AT 02:25PM (MST)[p]Yea, now if we could only get them to realize that ATV's, and too many slob operators (you know if youre a slob or not, so dont start with the whining) will do more damage over the long run than some foot access during this storm we would get some place . . . It's likely too late to make much difference, as soon as the food is iced up things go down hill real fast. . .

"Roadless areas, in general, represent some of the best fish and wildlife habitat on public lands. The bad news is that there is nothing positive about a road where fish and wildlife habitat are concerned -- absolutely nothing." (B&C Professor, Jack Ward Thomas, Fair Chase, Fall 2005, p.10).

Good job on Colorado. I am glad to hear that the state is doing that. Being from Utah i Wish that they woujld implent not only a feeding program but also close the state to shed hunting. But as long as it is not effecting the elk herds Utah officials could care less. Elk are the cash cow for utah and deer are just there. so congrats to colorado let us hope that Utah officials will soon follow.

Great work that Co. is doing feeding the deer and all,,,but it is very worrisome when the BLM closes any land for 4 or 5 months out of the year for any reason. Not a good precedent to let them set. One of those "be careful what you wish for type of deals".
My place is surrounded by BLM land and I have to lease my right of way from them so I have had some dealings with them and there is a mentality there that the public really does not need to be on "there" land. Note that they listed all those animals being fed as endangered. There are little things that we hunters or just people who love to spend time up in "our hills" for what ever reason need to be careful of.
That being said my hats off to all the donations of time and money!
