Whats your opinion on the late hunt? If you've had this tag I'd love to hear from you. My son has enough points to draw but Im not sure if this is the unit to put in for.Work schedule won't allow him to hunt the early hunts.

Sounds like you have no choice but to hunt the late.... or wait until he has a different job.

I've never hunted the late season but have hunted the early over a half dozen times so I have a feel for the unit... plus I look at it every single day and think about hunting it just that often too.

Here's my uneducated take on the late hunt:
It can be really good if a guy plans on hunting hard and smart. The problems I've seen stem from guys wanting to ride the roads and hope weather has pushed the elk down to them.
Some pray for snow, and lots of it, but I'd want good weather so I could hunt the way I like to.

This can be a great experience and an excellent hunt if you make it so.

Good luck to your son!

There are other late hunts that are better, IMO. Especially if he is in good shape and hunt tough terrain. How many points does he have?

Tony might be right. There probably are better late units but it all depends on your son's points.

With that said, I would NEVER shy away from a Wasatch late tag....depending on the true bull size he's willing to kill.

Keep us posted, especially if he draws.

Thanks for the great advise I really appreciate it. He and a friend have 12 points combined and would be happy with a nice bull. He got a 6x5 on a junior hunt years back but thats the only elk hes killed. Hes in good shape and so am I. I've hunted the Wasatch twice so I kinda know some areas.Hope they draw so I can see it again.

So they will average out at 6 points then, last year Wasatch late took 13 points to be guaranteed. 6 points should put them around 10% chance to draw. Not great, but better than an Expo tag :)

sorry Tony I didn't make my self clear. They average 12 nr points.one has 13 and one has 11.

It always seemed to me having multiple tags on a LE hunt would be cool, until I participated in LE hunts the last 3 years. Honestly, I personally would never do a group application on a LE hunt. It can be hard and draining enough filling one tag.

The other down side of doing two together is it is less hunting. Why not one this year and one next year? Each help the other out. Twice as much time on big bull hunts!

I would be 100% okay hunting the Wasatch late hunt if I was in that point class. My recommendation would be, however, to not put in together. But do the hunt two years in a row. (Both should have enough to draw individually. Combined at 12 they would be guaranteed I think.)

Tell the one with 13 points to draw. Tell the one with 11 to take one for the team by buying a point and planning to hunt next year instead.

That might be the best suggestion that I've heard for the OP.
Obviously they can do what they want but I really like what Vanilla suggested.

I can just say how much fun I had the last two years hunting the Wasatch muzzy with my two brothers and not holding the tag. I'm still very hopeful someone I'm close to will draw this year if I don't, because going out and helping is just as much fun as holding the tag yourself, IMO. You just don't get to squeeze the trigger.
