Well looks like I'll be chasing elk on the Books with my muzzle loader. Got lucky and drew the bitter creek south expo tag.

The journey begins!!!!

Hunted deer on the Books but never elk. Any info you guys are willing to share would be awesome.

Would also love to see pics of past success

With the season dates as they are this year, you may well have a better tag than the early rifle tag...

Friend of mine drew the same tag with just 2 bonus Pts back in 2009 or something like that. He was able to hunt with his family. Saw and called more Bulls than they could count. Missed the biggest bull he's ever seen in his life. Finally killed a cool 6x2 at the end of the hunt.

Lots of roads to hunt. Lots of hidden pockets you can hike to if you prefer that. As far as I know, you can call from the truck, locate Bulls and chase them as far as you need to. Plenty of vantage points to locate elk. You will find large herds with multiple Bulls, and I think a goal of a 330" is legit and possible. There are definitely bigger around, but I wouldnt pass a 330" myself...

Congrats on an awesome tag.

Also, PM sent.

You guys are getting me excited. I'd love to take a 340 bull with my muzzy. It's gonna be a long summer.

Coyote, any info you'd be willing to provide?

Great unit and great hunt. Not to sounds fake but literally elk in every canyon. If you go down much earlier than labor day they are hard to find but as it cools down and gets closer to the hunt they come out. Finding a 320+ bull is tougher but they are there and you are in for the hunt of a lifetime.
I was planning on putting in for that tag this year and have 13 points so had a decent chance of drawing, but I drew the Manti Expo muzzy tag so I will be chasing them down there instead.
So good luck, just typing this gets me excited to make it back down there one day.

Congrats on the Manti tag. Wish I could help you but unfortunately I haven't been in that unit. I'm sure you'll have a great time chasing screaming bulls.

Getting excited to begin scouting the Books for my upcoming muzzy elk hunt.

I'd love to see some pics of Books bulls from past years.

Thanks for sharing your website WhiskeyDog. Makes me want to start putting in for Mountain Lion.

Spent one day down there last year helping a friends friend, we killed a 344 bull on the last day. I think we got lucky! Seen 2-3 bulls over 320 that day and killed the biggest we saw in his bed at 55 yards. Muzzy hunt.

Here are a few from my brother's hunt in 2011

A nice broken 5 with huge fronts we helped pack out:

Family friend had the same tag, the same year this is him and his bull and my brother and his:

So someone told me that there is a water source in the Books somewhere north of the divide and west of seep ridge. Do any of you guys know where this spring is? It would be sweet to have water around that i can use to replenish during my muzzy elk hunt.

There aren't any well established water sources west of seep ridge. PR springs is just off of Seep Ridge and is a good source. There are several springs established for cattle as well as some newer wells for cattle. But those sources would be a use at your own risk type. Not tested for human consumption.

I wouldn't say that a 330 bull is a slam dunk, but there a bunch in that range out there and there is a good chance of getting one over 340, possibly 350 or bigger. Most of the shooter bulls you will see though will be in the 320 range. If you would feel good about taking a 320 bull on the last day and you see one early and have a good opportunity, you should definitely consider taking it.

As far as water is concerned - you better plan on packing all your own drinking water in. The springs are few and far between and loaded with girardia anyway. My family has hunted out there for over 70 years and we have always packed our own water.

Congrats on drawing the tag though. You will have a great time our there, the bulls should be really active then and you will be chasing them all over. Just a little jealous. ;-)
