I know of a deer that was just judged by Pope and Young last week that took the world record in its class, nontypical in velvet, shot with a bow. Anyone out there care to put a $ estimate on such a critter? He is a 9 x 15. He nudged out the previous record holder in that class by almost 10 inches.

There is no such thing as a world record "velvet" class animal.

Actually, there is a velvet class for Pope and Young, I saw it in the Pope and Young record book last tuesday.

Yes there is a velvet category for antlered species....they are not ranked and are published only one time in the record book. However, velvet entries are NOT eligible for world record status. Furthermore, NO entry can be declared a world record until it goes before panel measure.....which is not scheduled until April of 2009.

Listen to BOHNTR..he knows what he is talking about..

Sorry, I'm new at all this. I guess I misspoke on declaring it a world record. I guess I should have said, it is a tenitive record. The Pope and Young guy that judged it did say it will be reviewed at that panel judging next April. Sorry I didnt say it right, like I said, this is all new to me.

Absolutely no reason to apologize, 1luckydude.....I was just trying to explain some of the official P&Y rules, as many folks aren't aware of them.....especially when discussing velvet entries and world record status. If the owner sends it to panel in 2009 (Denver), I'll get to see it.....sounds like a nice buck.

Yeah, no kidding there! Probably the understatement of the year!

Thanks for the clarification, I guess I'll have to get a big one to make it to the panel in 09'!

Hey 1luckydude, Wade called me the other night and told me the deer you are referring to scored 255 and some change. It was shot in Idaho in an orchard, I hope this is the buck you are talking about, you didn't post the score so its hard to say. But, if I am right, then your friends buck is not the largest killed with a bow in velvet. Jed lowe's buck from Colorado, taken in 2005 scores 277 and some change and is the largest killed with archery equipment. Not to take anything away from a 255 inch buck, just not the world record (or largest in the velvet class). Congrats to the lucky hunter, if I'm not mistaken it's his first archery buck! Congrats again!

Yes, listen to BOHNTR!

Probably 2 or 3 years ago now, the first time i visited this site anyway, BOHNTR was posting some of the toad bucks that he had killed through the years. These were VERY impressive and i enjoyed his comentary that went along with the show.

Lucky hunter, i don't think that for one second. Luck doesn't fit in to the kind of consistancy that "the man" has been able to calmly and selflessly, achieve year after year. I've never had occation the receive any advice from the man but if i ever do, i'm gonna pay attention. Listen to BOHNTR, yep, some darn good advice!

Actually, a buck killed in Sask by two hunters was even bigger than Jeds. It was taken the same year. I think Jeds may be #3.

Well actually there was a deer killed in the Selway Bitteroot wilderness that was bigger than both of them comined! But it was killed by bears and when they took it in to get it scored they ate the measurer too, so from now on, bears are no longer considered a viable hunting method for consideration in either P&Y or B&C. They are still however thinking about considering wolves in the near future.

Too bad! That buck was HUGE! It scored like 500 or something like that.

No pics the bears just cant get a camera to work to save thier ass.

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave in a well preserved body, but to skid in sideways totally worn out shouting HOLY SH!T WHAT A RIDE!!!

I wanna see some pics of this buck.
