I drew 5B South Archery Elk and am looking foreword to the research ahead of me for the hunt. I have not yet been to the unit and have some basic questions if anyone familiar with the unit might be kind enough to chime in. I am a non resident and plan on towing a 5th wheel trailer out to camp. I am wondering about the road conditions in the unit and any recommendations on where to camp. I drew as a party with my buddy and we have 4 wheelers to get around but are interested in hiking in away from most the hunting pressure. How many branch antlered bulls would one expect to see on average each day if in a good location. What would be a realistic goal as far as size of bull to hold out for, we will hunt the full two weeks. If anyone has pictures of bulls from the unit please post. Thank you.

Congrats! I have hunted the unit twice, once my tag and once my brothers, had a blast, although I blew my best opportunity and came home with tag soup. I passed on several smaller bulls, most fun I have had on an elk hunt(besides not getting one!) There are good spots with good road access to pull a large trailer. Then you can spread out on your wheeler. I had no trouble finding areas to hunt and rarely ran into other hunters while out on foot. I hiked over 70 miles in 10 days, saw at least one good bull every day, most days a several. They were rutting hard when I was there(2012). Sitting water didn't seem to work as well there in the evenings at it did when I was in Unit 9 years ago. Once you get your maps PM me and we can have a phone call if you want to discuss some more details. I can't wait to go back there myself, but it will be a while!

Fun hunt for 280-320 bulls with a few 340 plus bulls. We camped at long lake. Bathrooms are available, good road to it, lots of ATV roads. My boy had his first archery hunt. Shot a 4 point bull the last day after missing a couple 320 type bulls. Fun hunt. Good luck.

Ringside,

I just found out today I drew the late rifle tag so I'm in the same boat as you, never been in the unit and just beginning my research.

Good luck.

Thank you for the replies.
Sage, although your info was not specific to this unit, I found it very interesting and useful, Thank you for taking the time.

I have my map somewhere so if you would like to discuss in depth send me a PM and I can dig it up, then we can discuss if you like, did you draw the early archery? (That is the hunt I have been on)

You are about to start an amazing adventure.
I wish You the best of luck.
Shoot straight!!!!!

LAST EDITED ON Apr-19-15 AT 10:12PM (MST)[p]That's a great unit, and a very fun hunt. I've hunted the 5B's three times, twice in the south, and last year, in the north on my son's muzzy bull hunt. Saw lots of elk on each hunt, and saw bulls north of 350" on each hunt. Took nice bulls on each hunt, a buddy shot a 6 pt. freak and my son shot a nice 5x7 when he was 16, then a big 6x7 last year.

You are in for a great hunt!

I am so glad to see the positive response to this post. My wife and I are sitting on 10 points now and 5bs is where we are planning on going. We too will be towing a 5th wheel, all the way from Oregon. We will bring a side by side but will hike more miles than ride. We will be happy with any bull, we just hope to have lots of chances. For us this will be a once in a lifetime hunt. I can't wait to here how your hunt goes
