My dad and I will be heading out for the archery season. We will not be able to go scout ahead of time being 1,500 miles away in Nor Cal. We will do a ton of research and work our tail off to get ready for this hunt. We expect to kill elk and have a great father son hunt for the books. My dad killed his first elk with a bow last year (a spike) and this year I want him to smoke a mature bull. Tell me about units 630-631? Whats the terrain like? Dads already hit the hills to fire up the conditioning and will be ready to work hard. Long season in Montana. We are thinking the 10th would be a good starting time to hit the woods. We can stay about 10 days maybe 2 weeks. Is there private ground in these units or are they mostly public?

Montanian's are "tite" lipper'd! So How about going on the opener, I hear it can be hot, but no one has been messing with the bulls yet and just stalk em like mule deer? Or the first week in October when there is less hunter pressure? Talk to me M/M...

Hey Beast- it's been 4 or 5 years but I hunted that unit and can give you some info, but hopefully you can get some more feedback from other guys that have hunted it and had a better experience than we did. Cool area but it was warm the week we hunted and while we saw a lot of elk and got in amongst em they were very call shy and believe it or not we spent more time trying to avoid the Mosquitos and rattlesnakes than packing elk out. Maybe we just had bad luck on timing. Wish I could give a better report.

You wont have trouble finding public land. There's private to but it belongs to APR and others that are in the BMA's.
Hot in early Sept, usually, and yep, mosquitos and snakes. You do have a better advantage with the elk before they are being chased around. But then the rut will be going on more mid Sept and the satellite bulls are vulnerable. A noticeable weather change from the 1st of Sept to mid Sept. Cooler at night will get rid of mosquitos and the snakes are limited to the sunny hillsides in the afternoons and not crawling around your camps at night.

I received a map of the unit yesterday in the mail. It seems like some of the private is in the middle of the unit. Snakes and Mosquitoes dont sound like a ton of fun and re-thinking going early.... It sounds like I drew a first season archery tag in NM so that would definity put me into MT later in the month....There are two big creeks that run north from the lake (or maybe they are just draws) on the east and west side of the unit that make up the boundary. Those look like decent places to start.
