POINT REYES, Calif. (AP) ? More than 250 tule elk died inside a fenced area at a Northern California seashore during a two-year period, and a lack of water is possibly the cause.

The National Park Service on Thursday confirmed the elk died inside a fenced elk preserve at California's Point Reyes National Seashore from 2012 to 2014.

The drought is likely causing the death, and the park is considering bringing in water for the animals, park wildlife ecologist David Press said.

"While we were out on the range conducting our annual census, we observed the ponds had gone dry. We are looking into options for carting water in, making sure there is water out there," Press said.

I have never been there, but I assume 250 animals is a large portion of the elk population in the preserve.

The only trouble with this incident is the "fenced area"... The fence killed the elk, not the drought. Elk would obviously leave an area that has no water. If they fence an animal in, they better prepare to provide that animal with food and water... Like any domesticated animal.

Terrible management..!!

Yup somebody should be fired

Meanwhile in Texas, some poor gal is being crucified for killing a feral house cat with her bow....

I've been to Point Reyes a couple times and seeing wildlife is THE high-point of the trip. The scenery is great but it's seeing critters that brings me back.
Too bad the poor elk are fence in and then forgotten like an abused domestic animal. Where's the outcry from the "animal rights" folks? Too busy worrying about a house cat, no doubt!

What a complete joke!!! Mismanagement at it's finest. The funny thing is you don't see any activity by the animal activist groups concerning this situation. Let me get this right, 250 elk die due to the possible lack of water, causing a slow painful death due to dehydration and no one cares. However, if they used hunting as a tool to manage that elk herd every animal activist in the San Francisco Bay Area would be there protesting. So wrong in so many ways!!!!
