My son drew a late pauns elk tag and ask me to help. I don't know why he put in there with 12 points. I have never been there, I have been told he should turn the tag back in.
Just looking for suggestions, is it worth it? Should I tell him to turn it back in? Haven't found to many articles that are positive.
I don't mind spending time this fall trying, just don't want to waste my time.

Yes for 12 points I'd turn it back in, but if he does have him do it early in order to give the next hunter plenty of time for their hunt.

I have hunted the pauns 3 of the last 4 years for elk either myself or immediate family and I would not burn 12 points on that unit. That being said there are always a few big [350+] bulls taken each year. Tough hunt for a mature bull though.

Thats kind of my feeling but I wanted to hear from a few people that know of that area. He might keep it and give it a go and i have always wanted to go there just hate to see him burn all those points.

That unit is not worth 12 points. I know that unit very well and I have seen some monster bulls over the years. However, they are far and few between. The late hunt is especially difficult.

LAST EDITED ON May-28-15 AT 09:14PM (MST)[p]Turn that tag in and go on a good hunt next year. I thought I could beat the odds and kill a bull down there last year with my bow. Needless to say I spent 20+ days and hunted hard to not see many elk at all, and only have one shot opportunity on an average bull. Tough, tough hunt with any weapon you are carrying, and honestly there are open bull units that I have had more action on. Kicking myself for burning the points I had, let alone 12....way too many for this tag imo. The late hunt could be the toughest hunt with no bugling action to locate bulls. If you want to just see the country don't burn 12 elk points to look at some beautiful scenery and big deer with no elk
