They have expanded the 4th season buck opportunities. Most units are showing buck tags for the 4th season. For example unit 61 now has a 4th season buck tag we can apply for. That was not available in 2007. I see that most units are showing 4th season tags that didn't have them last year. I wonder if that decision was made before all the snow fell this winter?

I THINK THEY MADE THOSE CALLS BEFORE THE WINTER SNOW FALLS HIT, & YEA A TON OF UNITS HAVE GONE TO A 4TH SEASON. THIS MIGHT NOT BE GOOD FOR QUALITY BUCKS IN 2-3 YEARS, HUNTING DRAW PATTERNS WILL CHANGE, POINTS WILL MOVE FASTER, THIS DOES CHANGE THINGS A BIT.... WE'LL SEE......YD.

I'm sure quotas are still subject to change. A 4th season don't mean squat if there are only a few tags given.

WOW they added quite a few 4th season units for deer but I am sure they wont be giving very many tags for most of these units but I do agree huntign them late like this will result in more big deer genetics being removed from the herd

HUNTING PASS IT ON

The wildlife commission sets tag quotas in the spring, so if there is significant winterkill, then the number of tags will be reduced or eliminated. Just becasue there is a hunt code does not mean that there will be any tags issued. IMO they have a good system that allows them to make a decision based on feedback from the field biologists to keep the populations where they are desired to be.

I would like to see fourth season tags available in every unit, with limited tags. If they took those tag numbers away from 2nd and 3rd season, it would spread out the pressure of hunters and provide for better hunting.

I wonder how that will work with prefence points? how will they determin how many points it will take to draw say unit 61- 4th season?

Depends on how many people apply versus how many tags are issued. Statistics on how many points the season takes won't be available until the draws are complete.

There are a lot of people that think the department sets how many points are required to draw a unit, these people don't understand that it can change from year to year based on how many people apply, how many points the have, and how many tags are available.

Sometimes the preference point system confuses people.

Well I spent some time comparing the 2007 and 2008 regulations last night. Looks to that the 4th season deer tags were added mostly to the Southwest Region GMU's and over towards the south central units. It will be interesting to find out if there were tags added for this season, or if the number of tags stay the same with a some put into the 4th season slot.

Wanna no a secret??? These NEW 4th season tags are a 65/35 resident/non-resident split, shhhh.

Checked out a tag that was a new 4th season tag last year in a unit where the 2nd and 3rd deer rifle are 80/20, the 4th had 35%of the tags go to NR's.

Hunt needs to take 5 or more resident points, 3 consecutive years for the 80/20 to kick in so get those 4th season tags the next 3 years.
