I found this buck on my familys ground last winter. the pictures were taken at the end of january. he is in full velvet. the first time i saw him he had a 4 point frame with junk on his back forks. A few days later i found him again but he broke off his back forks and was bleeding where they broke. im pretty sure it would be considered a cactus buck but im not sure. Anyone know or have an idea? I could be wrong?

I wouldn't call him a cactus buck, just a buck that probably lost his testicles... or maybe a horned doe...

Neat pic anyway...

LAST EDITED ON Feb-16-08 AT 10:03PM (MST)[p]is a stag and a cactus kinda the same? will it loose its antlers ever? or just keep growing? or stay the same?

People call them by different names, but bottom line is juat about the only way to have a buck in velvet in January is to not have any influece by testosterone. And yes, I suspect that they will never shed and will continue to grow, into a very unique rack.

A few years ago I shot a nice 5 by 7 during the rifle hunt in northern utah. He was in full velvet, and had no nuts. I don't think he ever shed. You can see were he had rubbed some velvet off and it grew right back.
