OK guys here it is.

For all those who need that magic Hunter Ed bonus point the last hunter ed class my team is doing this year is on April 5th here in Kingman.

Here are some real interesting stats when it comes to non-residents who are applying for those premium deer and even sheep tags in Arizona.

Right now the maximum bonus points for deer in AZ is 11. There are 11 residents who have them. There are 179 NR who have the max.

Those who have 10 points, include 166 AZ residents and 694 NR. Of that total, 681 are missing only the AZ Hunter Ed point to get in that magic max bonus point pool. Wanna guess what group makes up that 681?

For those in the know, if you want to draw a Unit 12A West or East LATE tag, a 13A or 13B or a LATE 12B tag and you are a non-resident, the only way you're gonna have a crack at it is to be in the max bonus point pool.

I've discussed this many, many times on this forum.

If you just want to go deer hunting in AZ, then you can draw with few if any points.

For the sheep guys, there are 359 AZ residents who have the maximum 19 bonus points, while 13 NR's have the maximum points.

There are 327 resident and 39 NR who have 18 bonus points. Of that total, 82 are only missing the AZ Hunter Ed point.

This class, if you take and pass it, will get you a PERMANENT bonus point for sheep, deer, elk, antelope, buffalo, turkey and javelina!

By the way, we are located in Kingman, which is about a two-hour drive from Las Vegas. Many fly into Vegas on Friday, rent a car, and drive down to stay at a local motel. If you drive in on Saturday morning, remember there is an hour's difference and if you're that late, you just might not graduate.

Anyway here is what you have to do to get in this class.

The first thing is that you must have taken and passed a hunter ed class in your home state. That is the state's rule--not mine- so don't whine and cry to me and say you're 65 years-old and don't have hunter ed in your home state. Doesn't matter. If you want to take the 1-day (12 hour) class, then you have to have that card.

Now you must register with Mr. Dave Williams at the AZ G&F Dept. in Phoenix. His office number is 623-236-7434.

He will need you to FAX him your Hunter Ed card and then he'll put you on the list. Don't just show up on April 5th cause if you're not on the list I get from G&F , then you'll not get a card at the end of the day!

Hope this helps and if you need a motel room, then I have a deal with a local motel (Silver Queen) 928-757-4315 who will give you a small discount if you tell then you are taking the AZ Hunter Education class.

I always have room for one person who'd like to stay in our spare room, or a couple of folks who can stay in my 5th wheel trailer that's next to the house. Page and I always enjoy the out of town company!

If you need any more info, e-mail me at [email protected] or call me at 928-681-4867.

See 'ya next month!

Hey guys!

I forgot to tell you in the original post that you have to have completed Hunt Ed in your home state since 19080 and have a card you can FAX to Mr. Williams in order to take this class...again that's the rule from G&F, not mine!

As to the cost, hang on guys, it's $5....

Hope to see some of you guys out here on April 5th. I did confirm today that the Silver Queen will give you a little break on the room prices IF you tell them you're gonna be here for the hunter ed class.

Good info Don, thanks for posting it.

One minor correction, as of this weekend, NV and AZ will be on the same time since AZ doesn't go to daylight savings.

Brahma:

Thanks for the heads up, sure didn't know that.

Usually get a few folks staggering in late who say "Oh we forgot about the time change."

Well you just took that excuse away..

Don

Just got a e-mail from G&F in Phx.

Seems just a few have signed up for this upcoming class. Sure would seem that those with 10 points for deer (About 800 folks are in that pool, including resident and non-resident) would be jumping at the chance to get in that max pool as that is the only way they'll ever have a chance to draw a "premium" AZ deer tag north of the Ditch.

Oh well, we don't mind teaching the class, the but the first time I end up with more instructors (8) for the class than sportsmen taking it, then we'll go back to doing just one class a year here in Kingman.

So are you saying I have to have an AZ hunter ed card in addition to the one I have in my home state? I am going to be applying in AZ this year and need every advantage I can get, though being this far behind the point leaders I doubt it will ever make a difference. Just seems crazy that AZ wouldn't honor another states hunter ed program.

Hello Don,

I'm a non-resident with 13 bonus points for sheep.

Will all the bonus point holders from 19 points to 14 points have to be cleared out before I will have a chance of drawing a permit?

Thanks,
Jack

Yukon Jack:

Nope, draw doesn't work that way. In AZ no more than 50% or two of the sheep tags in each unit, can go to NR's.

What that means is that you should be applying in units that have three or more tags.

You CAN'T apply in a unit that has just one tag.

Sheep are the one species where there are still LOTS of residents with max points, so drawing a tag isn't easy for sure. However that being said, each year a few sheep tags are drawn by some lucky NR, usually those with a fist full of points.

You are in much better shape than a lot of folks, but in the big picture, your odds are slim.

G&F sent me a roster today with about 19 names on it.

That surprises me as there are over 600 who have 10 bonus points and ONLY NEED the AZ Hunter Ed to get in that MAGIC max bonus point pool, which we all know is required to draw PREMIUM deer tags.

Still time to register and get in the class.

This is the last one my team will do in '08. Next class will be Jan. 10 2009 in Kingman, so if you can;t make it this time, find your Hunter Ed cards from your state, or take a class there if you took it BEFORE 1980 and we'll see 'ya next year.

Good luck in the deer/sheep draws in June.

I have one from my home State but it was before 1980 now I have to take the class in my home state one more time drive down to Arizona next year take that 8 hour one day class in Jan to get me in max for deer and the odds would not be that great to draw the strip anyway with max but a chance is better than no chance I guess. Is coues deer hunting any fun?It would be worth it for me to do this class to bump up to 13 elk points that could help pull a decent archery tag maybe who knows?
Next year has to be the year for me to just get this over with.
