Hi, Guys. We are coming to Colorado for Archery Elk. We were planning on hunting the last 9 days of the season ending on September 27th. The reason for going the last week of the season was to hear the bugling. My nephew now thinks we are going to late. He thinks we should be out there by the 10th and hunt until the 20th. Well this won't work for one member of our group who is in a wedding he is the best man in on the 12th. My question to you guys is this; if it were you and you had to be back for the wedding on the 12th, and you wanted to be hunting when the bulls were bugling and chasing the cows which option would you choose:
Option #1 - hunt the beginning of the season until the 10th of September?
Option #2 - be out there after the wedding on the 14th and hunt until the 23rd.
Option #3 - just stay with our original plans and go the last 9 days.

Thanks, for you advice.

Dave

if you just want to have any bull respond to bugles and come in to your calls then yes the last 9 days.
the 4 and 5 points will be responding and coming into calls then easily enough.

If you are hunting OTC I would say option 2. Late is not better on pressured areas and I see elk go quiet. If you are in a limited area then go last 9 days

Back when I used to archery hunt the best hunting action was just after the muzzleloader season ended. This year in Colorado you will have 7 days with basically the woods to yourself and a few other archery hunters. The elk seem to settle down pretty quickly and become more vocal. Something special about those last 7 days, the rut is on and the aspens are in full color. I'd definately stick to your original plan.

Option #2

My plan always allows for the last week if necessary, but my elk tag has never survived beyond the 20th of September.

Thanks, guys for your replies. We are going to go the last week of the season. Leaving PA on the 17th and hunting until the 26th.

Good Luck everyone.

AMEN!!!

any big event needs to be left out of hunting season! My wife and I planned our marriage, and all three kids around my hunting seasons. However, my birthday is Sept. 25th and I am a muzzy hunter. That being said, my wife celebrates my birthday before the hunts. I celebrate it DURING the hunt! Works our great for me because my birthday present is always themed around the hunts!
