SW Wyoming Shed Hunting Ban!

LAST EDITED ON Mar-22-08 AT 06:07PM (MST)[p]Lincoln County, Wyoming (Kemmerer to Cokeville to Afton -- Sage Junction winter range) approved a resolution to make it illegal to shed hunt until May 1st, 2008. It might be a bit late, but from what I was told, this is to lay the foundation for the future. I applaud them for stepping up in response to the recent issues, but it is a shame that a few morons harassing animals create these types of regulations. From the commission minutes from their website:

"PARA 15: Commissioner Harmon moved to sign the resolution that the hunting of shed antlers by the public in Lincoln County is prohibited until May 1, 2008 and that penalties be imposed for violation of this resolution, specifically; a fine not to exceed One Hundred Dollars ($100.00) or imprisonment for a period not to exceed thirty (30) days, or both. Commissioner Archibald seconded the motion. Motion carried."

What were the "recent issues" that precipitated action?

I pick up a few antlers here and there (if legal), but I am not a dedicated shed hunter at this point in my life.
 
I have spoken with the local game warden about trying to get this done, however, I was told that they took this issue up with the attorney general and the opinion was that once the antlers are naturally cast from the animal that Wyoming hand no claim them. Therefore they could not set a season or a ban. The only way to control this issue was to change it at the state legislative level.
 
why discuss shed hunting, why not just "close" the winter range. Do you have any idea how difficult it's going to be to make the law stick unless it applies to everyone, not just shed antler hunting?

The feds (blm, usfs, bor, etc.) and the state land management agencies have the authority to control access and what is and is not removed from those lands. . . Its is, to me, understandable that the wildlife department lack authority, but how could they lack the authority to ticket people who are bothering the animals. They have the authority to ticket people who are disturbing the wildlife. . . if shed hunters are pushing deer around and off their preffered wintering sites, that should be punished. Or, we could just ignore it because this is a free country, it's public land and by most standards, especially ones on this site, there already are too many laws. . .
 
We already have wildlife harrassment laws on the books in Wyo.Unfortunately,the way the law is written makes it very hard to prove in court.I and some friends are going to propose to the next legislative session(after conferring with G&F)that more "teeth" be put into the existing laws,with perhaps harsher penalties also.It's unfortunate that a few screw things up for the rest of us.While I will pick up a shed if I see one lying on the ground like someone above said,that is a far cry from chasing,harassing,and moving the animals.Some even go so far as to chase them in an attempt at getting them to drop thier antlers.I love the winter range closure idea.If the winter ranges were closed on Dec 31,that would still leave plenty of time for those of us who love to video and take pics before closures would occur.Don't open them back up before April 15th or later.I would also like to see harsher penalties for winter range poaching;perhaps even going so far as to make it a felony.This is a very serious problem in Wyoming,and many of us are downright sick of it.It's very frustrating to try to work with our legislature;many of our legislators are skeptical that we need harsher poaching laws.I don't know what we can do to persuade them.Any ideas would be welcome.NT.

What are you complaining about! You have been picking up sheds illegally for several months now. I am trying to get someone to ban" Picking Up Sheds with Tires.
You know you drove over that on purpose. Now get out of the mountains! or your going to jail.
 
I wish they would do something about this crap. There has been people out here since the begining of feb. I can't even explain how bad the deer look down here. And then to see some dumb@ss parked along the side of the road putting snow shoes on to go shed hunting is stupid! I wish they would do the same thing here!
 
PY;Like I say,more teeth need to be put into the existng law-and bite down hard on offenders!Make your voice heard about this!Remember,the squeaky whell gets the grease!Closures would not bother me in the least-in fact,I welcome it.And I am a shed hunter and videographer/photographer.I'm positive I could get the video-photo actvity done by the end of December!And if not,I guess that would just be tough luck for me.The resource is MORE VALUABLE than any one person!NT.
 
There has been signs posted for several years now in southwestern Wyoming, for no shed hunting untill after may 1st. The problem I have found is when I have gone into the areas after the legal dates there are horse tracks all over the place and no sheds around.

The deer look bad because it's been a particulary harsh winter.

However, I agree. What needs to happen is EVERYONE stays out of the wintering areas until May 1st. Including bikers, hikers, horsemen, real estate salesmen and private land owners.

For crying out loud, you'd think shed hunters were worse than woofs. You cry babies want to solve the harassment problem? Make it across the board. It's easier to enforce that way anyhows.

I agree with you Clouride---if it is shutdown for all human restrictions I'll stay off the winter range till May 1. THAT MEANS EVERYBODY!!

what about us guys who want to go pound a few coyotes on winter range? my friends and I make sure we stay away from the deer during this time of year.from what I have seen so far it has been a few idiots riding thier sleds ans atvs around the winter closure signs. then riding them through the sagebrush to find sheds from I have witnessed this more than once. not only does this harrass the deer and elk but ruins critical winter forage.a true shed hunter in my mind is one who likes to hike in someplace trying not to disturb the wildlife that we all love."it's like finding a needle in a sage flat"
 
i would think that all public display of anything related to antlers and sheds would only increase this problem. the more value we put on the bragging rights or the sale of this resource will cause a public demand for them. then anything goes to obtain them. i have quit posting pictures or comments because i think that the publicity is ruining my hobby.
