Colorado Licenses cut

After nearly two weeks of trying to catch a biologist in the office, I finally connected.
For Unit 44, he is recommending a 50% license cut in 3rd and 4th season. The commission decides in April, but that is what he's recommending.
For Gunnison, I couldn't catch the biologist but the story was the same for the people in the office who've spoken to him. Licenses will be reduced in those units. They didn't give me a percentage but did confirm there will be less licenses.

Wonder what that will do to preference point requirements in those units this year? Send them through the roof I would imagine.

Hopefully this doesn't raise the pref points in all units. I had a good shot in the unit I'm applying for with no preference points.

Just my opinion but I think the new 4th seasons will draw alot more applicants than tags issued which will mean better 3rd season odds. If Co gets weather during 3rd season FOR A CHANGE, those could be dynamite hunts. With that said, I applied for my $79.00 PP. Maybe I over thought this but we'll see.

I am just buying a Pref Point this year for deer and wait to another year or two to hunt .

I hope everyone else follows your lead. :)

I've applied for the second season so maybe I'll get lucky.

They ought to get rid of the 4th season hunt altogether. 44 is not what it used to be since they implemented the 4th season. Those bucks get murdered that time of the year.

I might be wrong, but I thought the Colorado 4th season deer hunts only started a few years ago. Could they have as dramatic an effect as that in so short a time?

Yes, the success rate is hovering around 100%, and most of those animals are mature. I have seen a steady decline in quality, in the winter grounds since they started that 4th season crap.

The worst part about cutting licenses is, they just made Barf Carter a whole lot of money, his landowner tags are going to go for even more now. You know they won't reduce landowner tag numbers!

They are required to, by law. Landowners get 15% of the total tags in the unit.

He is not, but he is a broker, and he has a large ranch I know of, leased out from archery, through 4th season. And, he also got the landowner tags that went with the ranch. CO passed some BS feel good law, limiting third party transactions for landowner tags, but all you need is an agreement with the landowner to accept the funds, then give you your cut.

CO has turned into nothing but a pissing ground for "hunters" with deep pockets.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-28-08 AT 12:33PM (MST)[p]Family man,
4th season has been around for some deer units for some time, however, SOME of the more 'trophy' units have had a 4th season for a few years and I love it!!
We'll take unit 44 for example (since 4000fps is ranting about it), they gave out 25 (22 general, 3 landowner) tags last year for 4th rifle. I dont see that 25 more bucks being killed is going to have a great effect on the mature buck population even if hunter success was 100% (it was nowhere near that last year when 20 hunters turned out for 55% success.... http://wildlife.state.co.us/NR/rdon...9-87111A80603A/0/2007StatewideDeerHarvest.pdf )
Anyway I think more units like unit 2,10, etc should have a 4th rifle season even if it is only 30 or 40 tags it provides more hunter opportunity in quality units.
You also need to keep in mind that some of these mature bucks that are harvested in a 4th rifle season may have never seen another spring (for whatever reason) anyway. I agree with being conservative with buck tag numbers but some of it is too extremely conservative.
If tag numbers drop this fall because a harsh winter so be it but next year I would expect to see an increase.
