Taxidermy $

I think I paid $350 for a basic wall job 2 years ago from Gunsmoke Taxidermy in Craig, CO.

He did a nice job and delivered to Denver later that spring.

huntinfoo. a "GOOD" taxidermist is worth whatever they charge. beware of the "my buddy" will do it for $250.00 people. some of the people on another post are worth the $600.00 plus they charge. you are not paying a good taxidermist by the hour but by his knowledge of the animal and skill in bringing your trophy back to life. some of the best deer and elk mounts in the business will be at antlerfest june 7 at cabelas in lehi utah.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-02-08 AT 02:35PM (MST)[p]If he is really good $550 and up seems to be the norm for a shoulder mount. As has been mentioned, beware of anything under the $500 mark cuz it may look more dead when you get it back than the day you slayed it.

A good taxi know's what a quality mount is worth and will charge it.

Mike

I have to brag a little and say I have a bro-in-law that does a hell of a job and doesn't charge an arm and a leg. He is here in Northern Utah (Ryan Cook in So. Weber). He did an awesome job on me and my friends deer and elk. I am a little bias as I haven't taken my animals anywhere else, but have seen others work at some of the hunting shows and I think he does a good job and is very particular to detail like the top end taxi's. I think he charges $500 for Deer and $750 for Elk, but may have upped his fee as he has gotten more business and people are willing to pay more for the quality he does.(I don't know as he owed me for some work I did on his house, so mine was FREE of charge...he still owes me a couple more so I won't be trying anyone else unless he stops doing it).

As far as what is a fair price to pay is? I think you have to do some research and also get info from word of mouth about the quality of work someone does. You shouldn't be too concerned about what it will cost, but what is it going to look like when it is finished. I also think you shouldn't pay alot for something that looks like s!@t. A friend of ours shot a nice bull in 2006 and took it to someone here in utah(I won't mention any names)who did a horrible job. It looked like a gernsey with antlers. He ended up taking it to my bro-in-law to get it redone after paying $1000 for the previous work. It was a 100% better. WARNING! Take the time to research the taxi and their work before taking your animal to anyone!

Here are a couple pics of my deer from 2006 and my friends elk that same year to show his work.

Enjoy!

Goat,

Nice animals and work, What a beautiful bull! Take him with a bow? and what unit?

I had a muley done in Belgrade,MT,the guy did a wonderful job and charged $450.00. Be aware of the taxidermists that tan the hides themselve.Use a taxidermist that sends his hides to a tannery, your mount will last a lifetime rather than ten years or so. Do not let them pickle your hides they will dry out and crack and look like s*#t.

UGAHUNTER, it was not wilds taxidermy, it was BigSky Taxidermy off of Cameron Bridge Rd.

My taxidermist is in Lewistown. He is charging me $500 for a pedestal mount created with two forms. I did throw in an extra cape with that price. He has done two others form me previously and I think they were between $400 and $450 (both wall pedestals).

Take Cooter4151 advice. I am a Ontario wildlife measurer. I have seen so many mounts that the guy wanted to save $100-$200, and ended up getting a deer mount that looked more like the neighbours dog. Make sure he doesn't do his own tanning. You want your trophy to last a lifetime.Do it yourself picklers last about 10 max then they start to crack around the nose or the eyes. Some don't get cured properly and end up with critters crawling through them. Mounts in Ontario Canada seem to run about $500-$600 for a average mount. A good friend of mine has won the worlds a few times. Every mount is made for you and your room. He cuts every mount to look where you want your animal to look(at you in your favorite chair). He has been in numerious mags. He does mounts for people from all over the world. He charges about $800 for a shoulder mount.

go look around and ask for prices and ask to see some of the work before you choose. i ended up paying little over 500 for my whitetail. now i find myself in the taxdermist once a month looking at there work.

It matters on what kind of a job you want done. If ya want a half a$$ job go somewhere cheap. If you really want it to look nice, you'll have to pay more. Quality doesnt come cheap!

The taxidermy for my deer was $400 and he did an awesome job. You don't have to pay a lot for good work. You just have to find the right taxidermist.

Man did you guys ever get ripped off !!!!

Here's a picture of a full body mount my taxidermist did for me, Yes I shopped around, closest price I found was $ 900- for anything like it.

So when he told me $ 300- out the door, I knew I was saving
At least, ten thousand dollars :)

The horns look at little different, & it bears a slight resemblance to a white tail, but hey
Think of the money I saved.

I'll be laughin all the way to the BANK baby !!

Sometimes when I'm home alone (all by myself),
I just caress it slowly with a wry smile on my face.

Thinking of all the tards that paid full price :)

BFE....that is a fine looking mount. Please don't take this the wrong way but I think your Taxi could have paid a little more attention to detail around the eyes and mouth. Also, working on the seams where the legs meet the body to make them a little more "seamless". Other than that...what is the name of your guy and how do I contact him?

UTodd, Those seams were the hunters fault. He was just going to do a shoulder mount so he cut the legs off. Tough to expect the taxidermist to completely blend in that kinda butcher job.

I really like this mount. You don't see very many of that kinda quality.lol

Good taxidermy like this is pure Art, the better jobs are an investment and worth every dime but the lesser quality ones are worth only what the owner has to pay if that.
