LAST EDITED ON Apr-09-08 AT 02:57PM (MST)[p]Just put in for a Mule Deer Tag in NM in unit 36. Planning on backpacking into the wilderness area. I know there are some huge Elk there but I don't know much about the Mule Deer there? Anyone out there hunted there. Here's hoping to draw out and wishing NM had a point system.

Thanks

Way up high and if your lucky you will shoot a 2 year old deer. Your best bet it to get one of the locals to let you set up a blind in their front yard. Thats where I have seen the biggest forkies. Your talking southern NM man

so what if its southern new mexico..Im from northern new mexico and when i moved to the south i never thought i would see a deer in the sand hills and desert..Much less see 30 inch bucks like i have every year down here

Well if there is 30 inchers running everywhere down here than you must be looking where I am and most others are not. Not saying they don't exist, Also do you agree or disagree with the post as far as unit 36 is concerned. If there are so many 30 inch bucks why are none of them showing up at the local taxidermy shops in the area. Just my .02 cents and its probably not worth even that much, but White Mountain Wildlife in Ruidoso has a whole lot more 2 year old and yearling buck that he is mounting this year than bucks that are older and or bigger.

im not saying they are every where..but i certainly dont diss southern new mexico anymore for not producing big bucks..I havent hunted much in 36, but my roommate is from there and i know he kills decent bucks every year..here is his from last year

I have hunted and hiked in 36 my entire life. We have a cabin in 36, Nogal canyon. That pic maybe from 36 but sure doesn't look like nogal peak. There are some good deer still in the unit but alot of the area is very thick and the deer are few and far between.

Now elk hunting is a different story.

Take a kid hunting. You will enjoy it more than they do!

I backpacked over into Nogal Canyon and up to the peak to hunt one Thanksgiving back in the late 80's. Met some guys who had a cabin there (Brick on the north side of the road further up the canyon). They later gave me a ride out and around to my truck at the trailhead. Maybe this was you, 264.

I did pass on a small 4x5 that was not wider than the ears.

Nice buck but our idea of big must differ. Not saying its not a nice buck but it is not big and if he killed that on 36 it was probably one of the best for the unit last year. I have mounted 2 bucks from up there in the last couple of years that were a little smaller than that buck and both hunters claimed them to be the biggest deer they had ever taken in almost 20 years of hunting each.

didnt say it was a monster deer..i said he kills DECENT deer every year...and that one was from two years ago..he killed a 27 inch 9 point last year..there was a bigger buck with him but disappeared over the ridge..and yes..both bucks were killed in unit 36

I elk hunted 36 last year. The largest deer I saw in the week was a pretty small 3x3. There are a number of deer living primarily in town, but when you get back into the wilderness the numbers and quality drop significantly. I saw very few deer in the Nogal peak area. There were a few down in Nogal canyon among the houses, but nothing significant. I wouldn't wast my time on a deer hunt in 36.

In all of your experience hunting deer in 36, can you give any advice to a would-be elk hunter?

Here's praying I draw! 1st or 2nd Rifle.
