Any Utah Spikers?

I agree 100%! I like seeing success photos of families and/or friends out in the hills enjoying the great outdoors. Unfortunately in the past some of the badass trophy hunters on here would bash anyone who would post a pic of a spike or cow. So the last few years posts with pics of success have dwindled.

My wife drew a cow tag that started the same day as the spike hunt so I bought her a spike tag just in case we saw one. It had been 5 years since the last time I went out on the spike units during the GS rifle hunt and I had a blast! I need to upload some photos to my computer and I'll write up a summary of our success.

I almost got a spike opening morning, then the bull turned his head and he had a non typical spike on the side that would of made him legal. Then it was off to helping my friend fill his tag, unfortunately no photos.

That spike is similar to the one I was going to shoot except a cheater coming off sideways on the one side so you couldn't see both points unless he turned his head. Gotta love hunting.

This may be 2 dumb questions but why is their a spike elk hunt? Why would a department not want these spikes to mature?

LAST EDITED ON Oct-16-15 AT 04:33PM (MST)[p]I shot a spike by two on the Fishlake. I love to see the spikes as well. The spike hunting model has worked well for the UDWR in my opinion. Some of the healthiest herds in Utah have had spike elk hunts for as long as I have been hunting elk and they grow plenty big bulls. I have hunted the Wasatch since I was a kid and it has been one of the best units in the state for elk numbers and some fine bulls until they started over harvesting the cows. The Fishlake was very good too and was also hit pretty hard a few years ago but is slowly getting better. Of course, I have to admit that a 330 to 350 bull to me is awesome. Personally, I would rather hunt bulls every year and kill rag horns because I hunt for the experience with family, fiends and the thrill of the hunt. Killing big bulls thrills me as much as the next guy but I'm kinda traditional. For the time being, I will keep hunting spikes until I draw another LE tag. Good hunting fellas.

Because there are people who just want the meat and don't care about antlers.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-19-15 AT 09:41PM (MST)[p]Here is the spike my son shot on the archery hunt. We set up on a water hole, built a make shift blind and this guy came in for a drink. One arrow at 17 yards, double lung and a short tracking job. Had my 11 year old daughter along for the entire thing. I think she is hooked on hunting now. This is my sons second spike in two years.
