Now I know the longer you can hunt the better. Being able to hunt the entire season gives you the best chance at getting a good deer. I really want to apply for the late kaibab hunt this year, however the season overlaps my wifes bull hunt.

What are some opinions on only being able to hunt 6 days of the kaibab deer hunt and not the last 4? I'd be able to hunt from the opening friday till wednesday. Is it still worth it?

It's Bush's fault!!!

Scremin,
Sorry but I don't have an anwser to your quetion.
But I would like to congratulate on asking a question
about a hunt before you put in fot it.
Rather than Getting on here and saying I drew this
tag and dont know anything about the area will someone
please help me.
Good luck in the drawing and good luck on your wife's
elk hunt.

Ransom,
I don't think thats an option, especially since I get a 5 month vacation starting June 4th. She'll be makin the money while I look for elk :)

It would be a true problem if you were lucky enough to draw. If she makes enough to hire a better lawyer than I would say don't risk it!

She has sisters, and you'll certainly want a 5 month vacation after hanging around one of them!
but the reason I get a 5 month vacation is because her job, not the family!

I know its a slim chance of drawing, but I'm feeling lucky this year, and if I do draw, I'll extend my vacation to 7 or 8 months!

I hunted 12B-West twice in the last four years. First time late, and 2 years ago the early hunt. Both fairly weather dependant hunts. Saw quite a few bucks every day, tho. No telling when a big one will make a mistake and show himself. Odds are definately better the later you go. I shot an old buck on the late hunt, and passed up 50+ on the early hunt without flipping off the safety.

The best typical one I saw killed was 2nd day of the early hunt; over 30", tall, and with big forks. Huge non-typical that got killed on the late hunt was a Pauns buck which came down to the line, east of Kanab.

I will be back whenever the hunting gods smile again! :)

My only experience with a Kaibab hunt was two seasons ago, when my son drew a 12AE late tag. We arrived late the opening day, planning to hunt the whole season. My son killed his buck on the afternoon of the third to last day of the season. It was the only trophy buck we saw in eight days of hunting. Saw lots of little bucks and most of the bucks killed on that hunt were little, with just a few nice deer taken in '06 off the east side.

As hard as that tag is to draw, I'd plan on hunting the whole season.

If she loves you, she should understand hat a late Kiabab deer tag takes precedence over a November elk hunt. Not sure how her points compare to yours, but you could apply as a party with her sh she has more personal interest in the deer too.

I hunted the 12A west late hunt this past fall. Weird year with the weather, there was no snow and most of the deer were still on the summer range. Our camp had four hunters and all four of us were tagged out by the third night. We killed a 160, two 170's, and I killed a 182" buck. We were un-guided, and all the deer were killed over 7,500 foot elevation, and the two largest were killed over water.

There's now way to know if you'll get lucky early or work your butt off till the last minute. Just work hard with whatever your time allows.
