Does anybody have an idea of where to hunt Mule Deer or maybe whitetail in Nebraska on public land? I was thinking about taking my 11 year old there for deer this year. From what I hear Nebraska has a lot of private land. Im not looking to pay to hunt.

tons of places to hunt get in touch with the fish and game and they can point you to some great spots of public land.

I would look northwest near Chadron or Harrison. There's the Forest, but there are also several state wildlife areas. And even some BLM up in the very NW corner of the state. Crescent Lake NWR north of Oshkosh can also be decent.

I would not expect trophy deer. There are a few, but most deer are younger and they don't get to live long enough to get real big. But it is neat country and can be a fun hunt.

AZMZHunter, My buddy and his brother went to the Sandhills area of nebraska 2 years ago. They hunted up near the town of Valentine. There is a lot of public land around there. they ended up killing a 165, and a 150 buck. Those were the two biggest bucks they saw. So like others have said there are not a lot of large bucks, but my buddy did say they saw a ton of large 3 points and a a bunch of 18-20 inch 4 points. they did see some larger bucks there but they were on provate property. The thing about Nebraska is you can buy 2 tags per person, so if you wanted to use one tag for mule deer and the other for whitetail that is possible as the sandhills area is about 50/50 mule deer to whitetail.

I have a cousin that ranches not far from Chadron. Like said your best hunting is on private ground, the government land gets hit hard. The deer, white and mule seem to be in certain places, like there might be 50 deer bunched up grazing on someones land as the season goes on. I have seen some 150" to 180" deer killed but all by locals. North west NE is mostly high plains ranch land with some govt. forrest inbetween.good luck.
