How does the draw work for Idaho mule deer nonresident hunt? Do they use a point system? How hard for nonresident to draw in? Any information would help! Thanks!

LAST EDITED ON May-05-08 AT 09:57AM (MST)[p]Buy a non-refundable license to apply, no points awarded if unsuccessful. Regular draw system, with limitation of up to 10% of tags available to NR's (no guarantee). Buy an over-the-counter tag if unsuccessful, and hunt in regular seasons.

Idaho has never been to friendly for the NR hunter. I use Idaho as a last resort state and probably wouldn't even do that if I didn't live so close.

Can a NR apply for deer, elk, and antelope in Idaho in the same year?

Everything I see says you can only hunt each species once, but I can't find where you can only hunt one species.

You can apply for Moose, Sheep, and goat

or

Elk, Deer, Antelope

So you have to choose which series you want. If you choose to go with Moose, Sheep, and Goat you have to wait and get a OTC tag or leftover tag for Elk, Deer, or antelope.

Funny you say that as Idaho is the only state that I know of that a non resident can hunt elk, deer, bear and archery antelope EVERY SINGLE YEAR with over the counter tags, no draw, and no waiting period.

If all you want to do is come to Idaho and hunt a once in a lifetime controlled trophy hunt, then I guess it wouldn't be "to friendly for the NR hunter".

I will complain about quality right along side of you, but there is no state that is more friendly to the NR in terms of hunting opportunity, especially for the youths.

It used to be that years ago when I went to Idaho they had a limit of something like 9500 NR deer tags first come/first serve. Has that changed so you can hunt deer there every year?? Thanks for the info.............Les

hasn't changed moosestock....just cost so much they usually didn't sell out.....residents can buy them now and idaho cost isn't much higher than other states now.

LAST EDITED ON May-11-08 AT 10:40PM (MST)[p] Non residents needn't feel left out sageman, I'm from Idaho and because I wasn't from Salmon they busted my back window out of my new chevy.

That's a very small minority of #####-head acting people! Most of them are the salt of the earth, help you if they can type. Come in acting like a holier-than-thou, money can buy anything prick and who knows what will happen. Come to Idaho Falls and I will put you on either deer, antelope,or elk, no matter who you are! Lots of new friends are made each year, and hunts traded because of the meetings. I don't like everyone, but sometimes we all need to get along, and things work out.

Yes, there is a quota-first come first served. They have sold out but not until very late in the year-you might have to plan ahead and get the tag by August.

Still a much better deal for the NR than say, NV or UT.

NR have till I think it is Aug 28th to buy there tags and then after that the Residents get to buy up the leftover tags. The last several years they have sold out within 3 weeks.

Idaho doesn't get a lot of respect from out of state hunters. No disrepect to them as I moved here only four years ago, but I don't think we should argue with them if they don't want to come here.

I will certainly say that there are just as many problem "residents" as there are problem "non-residents", actually there are many more but as a % they are probably about equal.

I would just love it if as a non resident you could only pick one other state than your resident state to apply for, man that would be great for me, though if I had to get that law passed I'm sure it would fail a miserable death. I get real tired of the "Idaho is my last resort application", if you think it sucks here DON'T COME.

Blank-
I sent you a PM.

You are right Blank, I shouldn't of give the impression that if you go to Salmon bad things are going to happen, just because you're not from Salmon. There are jerks in this world no matter where you go. By far I've had good experiences hunting and fishing around Salmon, or I wouldn't of kept going back. Unfortunately, because of the few jerks in the world people tend to stereotype people whether they be non residents or residents.

Im sorry! I did not mean to imply that the majority of Idaho residents are jerks they are not!I just wanted to say its not all "Welcome NR here's a bowl of cherries" Just like anywhere else go in with your eyes open.............Jim

Can't say I blame them, however distruction of property is against the law. I saw a Califoniacator dressed like a yuppie shooting at shadows in the Pashimori mountains! That could have been my shadow he was shooting at!
