I saw one out by that old cedar next to that big ole rabbit den, across the draw from that guzzler. Better be quick though, I think some other guys seen him also.

I missed him out by the trough on an archery hunt a while back. He's still kickin'...good luck!

All the ones I know of are on the left side of the old dirt road on the knoll to the left, just this side of Areyounutz Mt.

Sorry for the general attitude of the locals, but when you ask a question like you kind of set yourself up. I would say start by asking the local biologist, because the herd can get mobile depending on the weather during the rifle hunt. I would say do some heavy scouting this summer and fall. The front side of the vernon range (you can see it from the town of vernon) is a great place to start. Lots of country to cover, but a summer campover with four wheelers will reveal a lot, then find the canyons with little road access and you are likely to run into something bigger. You could simplify things and just hire one of the above responders to guide you, I think a couple of them do this in the fall.

The only thing that irritates me is that people apply for tags in an area they know nothing about, just because they heard of a few good deer there. They ask for help and expect to kill a trophy, get off your but and go scout.

Why does that bother you? If you don't want to help a fellow hunter out, simply don't reply, what a concept.

I know a 15 year old kid who drew this same tag with zero points, he and his dad have never been on the unit. I have gladly offered to assist on his hunt. I also know a lucky SOB on this forum who drew this tag via the dedicated hunter draw, he also has a Premium tag for elk on a good unit. I will be trying to give him some pointers as well. I hope they both take booner bucks, even though neither have set eye on this unit, let alone put any shoe leather on it!

There ARE 30 inch bucks on the Vernon unit.

Buck hunter dont get discouraged, Just scout as much as you can afford with gas as it is. It is a pretty big unit with deer spread all around. There are more deer on the main part of the sheeprocks and probly a good place to start looking. I have been suprised at what you run across not expecting it. I dont know that you will even see a 30 inch buck but you may luck into something even bigger. It is a fun place to hunt and alot of gorgeous country, I planned on hunting a buck last year that was over that mark and walked right into a 32 inch buck I had no clue of, I was so lucky to harvest him, you just never know whats around the ridge. A few real nice deer have come out of there so they are there, its just finding them. Whatever you do enjoy your hunt, make the best of it and I wish you the very best of luck.

I have spent alot of time on the vernon. There are lots of big bucks 30 and better. Get away from roads, into the steep mountains and plan on packing one off the top.

I am the lucky SOB that PRO refers to. Although I agree to some extent about knowing a unit, I also understand the desire for opportunity. Therefore I am of the same opinion as PRO if you don't want to help just don't. Personally I am of the opinion that helping folks pays off in the long run. I drew the Vernon rifle tag through the dedicated hunter program, I had no idea where Vernon was until I received notification of the permit. I will have very little time to scout this year and gas prices will damper that even more. So I will rely on anyone who is willing to help. PRO already stepped up as has Fishon and a few others. If I take a buck a lot of credit will be offered to them. I have shot many large bucks, so I am somewhat picky but hope to hunt most of the season.
FYI I also drew a premium elk tag and that will be where my time is spent. This is a chance of a lifetime, yet when I read a thread on a different site about a fella from Wisconsin with the same elk tag (any weapon) I did take the time to respond. Gave him some places to start looking on maps and google earth.
Hopefully him or his son will be here this summer and we can go on a scouting trip. If I fill early maybe I can help him, it is an area that needs horses, I have a few mules. He will know where I am camped if he needs help packing an elk out.
Bottom line is I am thankful I was raised by the Golden Rule. I know my hunting experiences have been enhanced by treating others the way I would like to be treated.

Never Been on the unit but this is a buck I mounted from there a couple of years ago. Don't know how he stacks up compared to other bucks from that unit but thought you would like to see him.
Wish I could remount it for the guy I hate looking at pictures from a few years ago. Definetly alot to be desired.

Thanks for setting me straight PRO. I picked up a set of sheds that were right about 30". Too bad it is a 2 point.

Is there anything you are not a PRO about? I have spent many days in the Vernon unit. Your chances of killing a 30" buck are a hell of a lot less than a 400 bull on your unit of choice.

Good thing I am not helping anyone. All I can find are dink 4 points.

ktc,

You can help me, I don't know that I would shoot a dink 4 point. But I wouldn't mind the company. I was talking with Cole Monday, he kind of told me the same story that I should see a few decent bucks, but not like it once was. Cole had a friend with the tag last year that shot a decent buck but no where near 30". I am probably in trouble but hey it is a tag I didn't expect so I am not complaining. The last buck I shot with a rifle scored 197, but was only 29" wide who needs 30"'s. A 26" 200 point buck would be just fine, let me know if you hear of one!

As far as PRO he has always been good to me. He is welcome to keep me company also. However I am not buying any t-shirts. I would consider a nice Camo long sleeve button outfit for us though.

Whether we find a 30'er or not, I will have good entertainment listening to you two argueing over who was right or wrong. I'm sure the I told you so's would be a flyin.

Maybe between the pisscutter bull I am projected to harvest and my dink 4 pointer I wil hit 400"'s.

Elk 280"
Deer 120"

MP,

Since I try, whether people believe it or not, to help others I can toss you a few do's and don'ts. Is there a big trashy 30" on the unit? Probably, but it is slim pickens but should be a better hunt than the general ones. Get serious 3 days after it opens and all of the Utards are gone.

I have also seen it get better than 2.5 years ago. In 05 I spent a ton of time showing and helping a guy out. The best we seen was a 160 5 point. Use the mules and get off of the road. That will help a ton.

One day soon I can give you some spots to try and some I would not mess with. I think Cole summed it up pretty accurately.

You do not want me and PRO in the same camp. We might ruin your hunt.;-)

Not a chance. Not the freebie Vernon tag? Maybe the elk, but not the deer!

MP,

I got thinking about your comments of helping people. I try to do that also, but unfortunately, I think help is give and take. For the most part, people here are good about it. However, there are those who I regret helping or should have never wasted my time.

I have been pm'ed about elk units by out of state guys. I have rated them and given my thoughts as personal opinion. Do you know how many of these dinks have not even taken time to write back and say thanks?

I have pm'ed people asking for help on threads and pm'ed them without a post. Do you know how many of these dinks have not responded back?

I have given help thinking I would get the favor returned. When it comes time for that, do you know how many of these dinks cannot hold up their end of the deal? Your info is worth nothing and their info is like some CIA secret.

There have only been a few cases like this for each scenerio, but I do not blame people for getting on guys for asking sometimes. Look at how this post is worded on the question? I could not ask a question like that and if he gets some grief maybe change the way he asks?

I can see your dilemma. Drew one tag and got lucky on another you never applied for. Now you need some help. Time is short, fuel is expensive, and you have never been there. You are getting info and asking what to expect. Not, "Where is a 30" buck?"

>Vernon and 30" bucks should probably
>not be used in the
>same sentence?

Not true KTC. I personally saw 2 out there in one bunch of bucks last summer that were touching 30 and the horns still had some growing to do. They are there but they are hard to find. I know of one area there that i go to all the time and am trying to get into good photo range to get the pics. I was out there this weekend and the horns are growing fast. I couldn't tell you if any i saw are going to reach 30 this year. let you know in another month though.

FOR SOME REASON WHEN THERE IS A VERNON THREAD POSTED ON HERE THERE IS NEVER MUCH RESPONSE. FIRST OFF I WOULD NOT THINK THAT YOU WILL SHOOT A BUCK LIKE THE BIG ONE YOU HAVE HANGING ON THE WALL ALREADY. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A 30" BUCK. YOU WILL DEFINATELY FIND ONE OUT THERE BUT IT MAYBE A 2X3 OR A 3X4 FINDING ONE THAT HAS IT ALL IS REALLY REALLY HARD OUT THERE.

WHICH TAG DID YOU DRAW FOR ELK?

AND WHAT UNITS DO YOU KNOW WELL?

ktc,

I do believe you are right. How you ask is very important, it determines how I will respond most of the time. The fella I am helping with the elk basically posted how excited they were for the tag and that any help would be appreciated. I e-mailed them with some questions as to why they applied for that unit and what they expected. In this case he gave all the right answers. They loved hunting elk, picked a unit in Utah they had a good chance of drawing and hoped for a 6 point but were just happy to get the chance to hunt. A guy like that I will help. Coming on and asking for specifics to a 30"er probably didn't set well with everyone. However, I do get tired when everyone justs jumps down someones throat. Now I realize I have done that, trying to do better, at least give the thread a little time before I get arguementative.

Cole said he should have an elk tag for your daughter, now there is a hunt I am excited to help on if you need it. I always enjoy helping kids.

JRED,

I am just excited to get the tag. I have been fortunate to live in area that allowed me to shoot some nice bucks. I counted up and I have 9 bucks over 24" that score above 170" I have a 20" buck that scores 184" than another 6 bucks over 24" that were young so didn't have the mass or length to score that well. I very selodm find a deer that I will shoot anymore. In Idaho last year I passed a couple of real nice bucks. I am going to the Vernon for a chance to hunt something more than the general season in Utah. I am way excited about the tag probably because it is a bonus, maybe even more than my elk tag which I expected to draw. I really won't be disappointed if I don't shoot a buck as long as I have a good hunt.

My elk tag is a N Cache premium tag. It is going to be challenge to shoot a bull of a lifetime. This is what I am looking for.

PM on elk units you are interested in I know a few.

MP,

I think some spots in Vernon could hold something special. Not sure? Like I said I can give you some info that may or may not help. One deer wintered in a spot I know that was not 30 but had everything else. Definite shooter. That place is 4 wheeler heaven and in my opinion pretty much ruined the unit. Mules will be key IMO.

Should be a fun hunt. I would like to have that tag, but I would not feel confident I would kill anything special, but there is a chance?

Get ahold me this fall, I spend alot of time ot there in some rugged spots in september and should be able to help you out alot. 26 in four points are a dime a dozen and there are some really good bucks.

Jake,

Vernon is a funny place. Seems like October the deer haul butt to someplace? They are pretty easy to find until the bowhunt ends, after that, it is anyone's guess where they go?

I have played that game a few times and I have always lost.;-)

thanks to everybody who has repiled and it is interesting to see how people think they own the deer in certain places. i have seen multiple 30 inch deer out there and have a few i have been watching for a couple of years out there.i am extremely familiar with the unit. some people just go to the old spots thinking the deer will always be there. ever since the improved the reservoir the whole area has been swarmed with people. which is fine i just dont go there anymore.thanks to everyone who repiled. just for the update my dad killed a 32 inch 6x4 out there last year and we passed up a bunch. thanks again lets keep in touch througout the summer i will be out there next weekend let you know what i see

If you have seen multiple 30 inchers and are extremely familiar with the unit and your dad took a 32 incher and passed on a bunch more, then why the F@&% are you coming on here asking where a 30 incher is?

That's about as good a question as i've seen. LMAO!

joey

Guided a thirty three inch, 210 buck rifle, a thirty two inch knarly old bruiser that didnt score but who the heck cares muzzleloader and a thirty two inch 197 muzzy buck last year. But there are mostly young 24 inch bucks on the unit. And most of them die when lazy hunters kill them. It's called hunting for a reason! Shoot what ya want and hunt how ya want but don't badmouth a unit that you drive around a couple times in july. Been killing great deer since the early 80s and it's taken that long to KNOW where they go after August. Good luck!

Sounds like a steller buck! How 'bout sharing a pic?

I seen a 32" 3 point there this last year... but the problem was that he was really willow horned.

bbc,

No kidding. Those deer split from the Sheep Rocks and go? The Sheep Rocks are great bow hunting, then who knows? Sounds like some good bucks are being taken. Better than I have personally seen. I do know of a 3X4 shot with a bow that 32 or something like that. I think Vernon is doing better than a few years ago.

shotgunjim,

I should bring you another case of Bud for that reply.

Like I said earlier in a post, the deer like to migrate off the known areas, by hunting time. I don't live in the area any more, but grew up out there. We had a cabin out there for thirty plus years, I worked out in vernon for a summer and spent a lot of time on motor bikes running around the hills. I learned where those deer liked to go back then. Pretty sure they still go to the same areas. It can be a lot of work getting the big ones, but in high school a guy named mario shot one not too far from the town of vernon, pretty much right from the truck, that tied the big buck contest, so they can be just about anywhere. These guys are right though, Vernon, for whatever reason, doesn't have the genetics the pauns or henry's have. It will be a great hunt, but have realistic goals, and you will enjoy the hunt much more.

Just to give some more support for all of us PRO Vernon unit guys....Went out scouting today and saw 3 bucks that were already well past their ears and will be pushin 30" come August. All of the deer were in great shape and looked good. Saw a few little newby fawns as well. So come time to hunt us guys who drew a Vernon tag should be posting some pics of some very nice bucks. Good thing I'll get first crack during the archery. Good luck all.

Ktc, make that a case of Sam Adams please. You know where I live.

I drew that tag in '02. Wish I knew then what I know now. The only reason I put in for that tag was because in '01 I found a matching set off a 212 buck. Never did see that buck. I saw a couple bucks that would go 30 during the summer but lost track of them opening day of the muzzy hunt. I saw bucks everyday of the season but never pulled the trigger. In late Nov. of that year I saw a couple of real bruisers which one might go 30 in a place I did not expect to see them in. Thats my Vernon experience.

does anyone know who to contact about getting permission on private land or are there any landowners willing to let people on

I think you all need to focus more on the Fillmore Oak Creek unit. Alot bigger deer, did you see that buck that come off of there last year?? Now those are some genes.

The vernon unit isn't made up of a lot of private locked land. There is plenty of land to hunt without worrying about getting access to private.
