Intro & Boulder Archery

Well I've been a long time reader of these forums and decided I should start to contribute and join the fray! I've been fortunate to live in the Rockies my entire life (Wyoming) and my passions include spending time outdoors with my family and hunting and fly fishing, unfortunately we will be relocating to Texas this summer due to work (don't hold it against me!)

So with great timing, after many years of playing the non-resident game I was the lucky sucker who was drawn for Boulder Archery at the Expo this year!! Never stepped foot in the unit and I know I have my worked cut out for me, with 5 general Utah deer points I'm planning to have a Boulder deer archery tag in my pocket as well. I plant to scout as much as possible from May - July and then moving south in early August. Any advice anyone could give would be greatly appreciated!

I'm very familiar with Wyoming hunting especially the western half, spend most of my deer hunting in Region G and H and elk in the same region, but my family has property in elk Area 24 and I've hunted it multiple times and I'm happy to share any information I have if anyone would like it, I have found some great fishing in the entire Rockies too.... Looking forward to contributing to this site....

Happy hunting!!

Man what a great post I wish I knew information about the unit because I would love to help you. I like you and I don't even know you. If your ever in Oregon I'll point you in the right direction welcome to monster mulies!!

You know what they say:

When you don't even know how to get to the Unit You Must Turn the Tag back in!:D

(((RAZZIN Ya!)))

I'm sure somebody here will Help you!

Best of Luck!

Congratulations you drew a Awesome tag ! They have been killing some big bulls out of that unit for the last few years. Hopefully you can make a few trips out and learn they area a bit. It is a big unit and has a lot of hiding places. Archery bull in Utah can be tough. Hopefully the rut comes in early for you.

Thanks fellas, really appreciate the warm welcome and help given. I know this hunt will be a challenge with learning this new area but I'm excited for it! I went to school in St. George and have spent quite a bit of time in Southern Utah so hopefully that will help with the learning curve.

I plan to scout hard during the summer and learn as much as I can, I'm having the most trouble deciding what time to focus on hunting, I probably will only have a 14 day window to hunt as we are moving to TX in early August. Pluses and minuses to each I guess... What would you guys do?

First two weeks - no rut, hot and mostly hunting water and patterns seen during the summer scouting

middle two weeks - pre rut, I'm sure the bulls will be moving around a lot more.

last two weeks - should be some rutting activity but im guessing quite a few any weapon hunters will be arriving and scouting too..

My understanding is there will also be an archery deer hunt and spike/antlerless hunt, does the boulder usually get a lot of spike/antlerless pressure during the archery?

Can you split it up into two separate weeks. Maybe one at the front and then another at the end. 2 weeks straight is a long time. For me it is hard to stay hard core dedicated that long. It is easy to get burned out. If you take a break in the middle, it will help to get you re-energized and itching to get back and go at it even harder.

From what I know of the unit the more in the rut you are the better. There really aren't many places to glass lots of country as it is pretty thick and fairly flat on the top. You really need the elk to be talking so you can locate them. My buddies uncle had the rifle tag 2 years ago and really struggled to see many elk. They moved around a lot to find them. Also don't be afraid to look low in the cedars. The best bull they say was off the top.
Have fun though this is the best year to have an archery tag in this state.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-06-16 AT 07:21PM (MST)[p]Wyoft,
Great luck to snag a tag that way. If it were mine I'd get as much info as you can, just like you are doing here. Then I'd take a summer trip or two finding roads, access points, etc. Finally I'd spend the last two weeks of the hunt trying to get it done.
The first few weeks of the Utah archery elk hunt is mostly a wallow waiting game if you want odds on a good bull. That's especially true in areas like yours with lots of thick cover. If you don't have trail cam intel on where the big bulls are, sitting wallows is even a crap shoot.
Once the bulls start talking (usually after labor day) the hunt gets much more interesting. Regardless, it should be a great adventure.
Best of luck.

I'll be down there off and on through the first week of September. Could assist some the second week as well. Should be no problem putting you on a good bull. Are you looking for a caller and help, or just info?

Congrats on the tag. In between Posey and Barker is loooooaaaadddeddddd with Elk during the rut. Go learn it. Good luck.

Thanks again for all the help and suggestions, I took the family to central Utah last weekend with a quick stop in Capitol Reef National Park and through some of the Boulder on scenic byway 12 from Torrey to Panguitch and I think I'm more overwhelmed than I was before!

What beautiful country, and a truly enormous unit! I'm already to head back south this summer and start scouting. As soon as possible. I'm jealous of those of you that live in southern Utah, you guys are lucky!

Don't remember how to do a PM, but I'll share if I can get it figured out. I was on the unit last year, but have limited info as I shot way too early.

And I wouldn't mind hearing your thoughts on Wyoming deer with max points and/or gen elk area.
