Its 100 deg outside for the 2nd day and so its got me thinking...is this a preview of how summer going to be?
Northern CA was spared but Southern CA burned..
Their was not much rain or snow here also and snow melt is almost done, Sierra's has a lot of dead trees and Oaks had problems... The Governator declared the official start of fire season last week which starts the hiring and freeing up of monies for CDF! So it it Utah? When was the last time Wyoming burn? Colorado might be ready or is it New Mexico, Oregon?
what do you forecast as for as how your state will burn this year! Nor Cal better jump on every spark....

Rack, I live in N. Cal. and I mean the real N. Cal. and it was a poor winter for rain. Yea, we got a lot of snow and that is fine but we didn't get hardly any rain at all. The water table has got to be extremely low, the grass is all dried out the plants around my place are dying. A friend of mine who's dad uses his well to water the yard said that the well was already drying up, he said that usually doesen't happen until July. I'm thinkin it's going to be a long hot dry summer. It was in the high 90's yesterday, suppose to be 100 today and tommorrow.

It's only MAY!!!!

What makes for a big fire year is a long wet spring that really grows the grass up. This year it seems we had 2 days of spring between a long winter and summer, if it stays hot the ground will dry out and we wont get alot of grass growth which means fewer and smaller fires than in the past.

I think Cali is in trouble this year. Come late fall it will burn in the south end, up north before that. But whats even worse for you Californians is the Gov. freed up money to help CDF!!!!!!! Thats the real red flag.

Is that ethical?

We are still trying to get rid of winter over hear in Utah. This will finally be the first week of decent snowpack melt which is about 2-4 weeks behind right now. Heck I got snowed on last week in southern Utah. We don't need anymore fires this year after the beaver and salt creek fires.

Woke up this morning to 48 degrees and snow on the mountains.
The high is in the mid 70's today in south central NM.

The nothern part of the state had record snow fall and got some more earlier in the week. Down south we are very dry. The national forest has been closed since May 1 due to fire danger.

But with these temps what the hell is global warming?

Take a kid hunting. You will enjoy it more than they do!

As a former CA resident, CDF routinely cranks up their PR program this time of year. If it was a winter with below average rainfall, it is really dry "its going to be a bad fire year". But if it was a wet year, there is really a lot of vegetation growth "its going to be a bad fire year". You have to realize that most of CA is a made up of a fire climax fire community, it is normal and natural for it to burn and it doesn't make any difference if you put a few(or a lot) of houses in the middle of it. Bottom line, in CA it is always a bad fire year.

>marriages in Ca. LOL

Nah, CA burning is normal. It'll fall in the ocean for that kind of stuff. ;-)

I live in Northern Kali and it is very warm! 88 yesterday and maybe that today. That's a new record for Eureka which is right on the ocean.

Back when logging was allowed on National Forest land, I hated forest fires. Now that we can't log the trees, I'm all for a good forest fire. It takes logging or fire to create good deer habitat. So, BURN BABY, BURN!!!!

Maybe I'm crazy, but it seems to me that fires are the best thing going for the wildlife. They need the new growth and the regenerated browse that comes in after the fires.

I know some bad things can happen when a place burns, but generally it's good for the wildlife.

Oregon has a record snow pack. Spring melt will last into June maybe July. Fires should be minimal, but I'm no Smokey The Bear. Ask the question in August.

I'd like to see more burns personally. Kill the Pine Beatle!

Flew over some beatle kill up here in Montana today. I couldnt believe how bad it was in this area. The whole forest was dead. I hope to heck that area burns up.

Sickening isn't it. Can't harvest it. Won't burn it. Can't effectively kill the beatle. Why create jobs and income for people to clear it and why create habitat for elk, rabbits and deer????!!!!!geeeezzzzeeee that would be too easy. NAAAHHH let's let the timber ROT and let the beatle prosper and the habitat go to H.

Yea its looking real bad here in nor-cal.113 degrees on my deck at 2 oclock today. My pond that stays full till mid august is about 1/4 full, but the pigs are hittin it beacause the creeks are dry already.I didnt have to do much brush clearing this year.with the high winds nothin has grown, the grass that did grow has been eating buy the horses already.Gona be a rough summer, the price of hay is going to be as much as gas here soon.Hopefully we dont get what so-cal has had the last few years, this place would burn all summer.

Yup we should burn to! So much beetle kill in Wyoming that if it gets going it is going to be ugly. Good snow pack, so the grass should grow. LOTs of fuel! There was a big fire in some beetle kill near Shell last summer, and if it is any indication it is going to be ever where, it was black until fall, now covered with 3 feet of snow. Wait until that melts.

No harvetsing, camping in beetle kill areas closed, just no commom sense!

I sure wish you folks in the "hot" states would get some decent precip for a change. Every time your hills start burning we get a big rush of folks moving up here to get away from it.

LAST EDITED ON May-17-08 AT 02:01PM (MST)[p]Arizona burns every year, this year will be especially sensitive because we had a ton of winter rains which made a bunch of spring growth that will all be dead soon. Then the fires will start.

Has anybody checked with Al Gore to see what the real skinny is?????

I'm for thinking you'll probably have fires in your State this year. DUH!

Wildfires are my living. Arizona isnt too bad off this year with the exception of the sonoran desert. The forests got enough moisture this winter that there probably wont be a whole lot of fire in them this year, but there are always a few fires regardlesss.

The Mohave desert greened up, but all forbes, this vegetation doesnt carry fire very good, so fire danger isnt bad.

The sonoran desert has a different kind of grass, and lots of it this year. They are going to be Arizonas hot spot this year. I'm kinda surprised they havent really broke loose with a lot of big fires yet. Luckily the monsoons will green them up first.

Fires arent always a good thing. Depending on the ecosystem and severity of the fire. If you nuke a forest it isnt necessarily always good.

Is that ethical?

LAST EDITED ON May-24-08 AT 08:54PM (MST)[p]It will be really interesting, we got 3" of rain in two days, the most rain that I have seen in 12 years, in fact we got all of what we got for the entire year last year, in two days. And more in the forcast! :)

We've had lots of country get 6-12 inches of rain since last Thursday here in SE Wyoming. Amazing. Creeks and rivers flooding, all small ponds have water. It's the most May moisture this century; things look great. Should be some good antler growth to follow. The Laramie Mountains have not been like this for years. And most of the above average snowpack has not really come out yet. We'll have runoff for some time this year.

We had some tornado damage in a few areas, but the rain really helped the wildlife and range conditions. But it will make some fine fuels for fires later in the summer.

here we go again...Huge smoke plume of smoke seen over the hills over Santa Cruz way.....another fire toward Orville(sp?)and south of Monterey.
next few day will see high temps and high winds!
Arnold Schwarzenegger declared drought in CA!
just starting..........

ITS STILL SNOWING HERE IN COLORADO. There are a few prescribed burns that they have been wanting to set but nothing wants to burn yet,

Fire is what we do and right now we are just getting started. Here in Northern New Mexico it is still dry in the rangelands lands but the higher country is looking okay. BUT with a little wind it will go wherever the beast wants to go.
I just seen all the fire popping of in Cali!! Nothing new that that place is burning, but we have a 20 man fire crew just waiting for the dispatch to go give a hand to the Fighters in Cali. Looks like they sure have their hands full down there.
Deer and elk are magnets to burned area but there is a proper managment way to burn and succeed in that there is new folaige for the animals. Rather, than having the whole landscape turn to moonscape and ahving peoples livilihood in danger.
We have some idiot arsonist here in Northern NM that started like 21 fires yesterday in a area, the firefighters caught the fires but not the idiot!!

Stay safe everyone Look up, Look Down, Look all around!
