I was wondering what your favorite elk calls are? I'm not much on calling, but I can say I have had terrible luck with the primos hoochie momma!

Thanks

LAST EDITED ON Mar-10-16 AT 07:07PM (MST)[p]If I use one, generally I prefer a single reed, diaphragm call. Don't call much anymore.

Many calls are more effective at calling hunters and their wallets to the cash register, than on elk. The skill of the caller, does weigh in though...

LOL, yes!

I had really good luck with the BUGLING BULL WHO'S YRR DADDY

I have always had a hard time being consistent with diaphram call sounds, and these open reads help with that.

Many will think I am crazy with this, but I have had great luck with the hoocie momma. Called in good bulls with it. It has got the job done more then a couple times. I am starting to look into other calls also lately, but it did work.

I am no expert, but even I can identify a Hoochie Momma Oink over a real sound. I am sure an elk is generally much more discriminating than me. No doubt a love sick bull may come to almost anything, but I'd stick with a reed or a diaphram.

I've called elk in with a little bit of everything (including the Hoochie Mamma, which actually gets the credit for my largest bull so far), but I'd say my preference is primarily the open reed variation. I have most of the Primos elk calls (which have worked quite well over the years), and I generally like to take three or four calls with me in addition to the diaphragm as I've found in the areas I hunt that occasionally one call seems to light them up, and another doesn't do anything. Then on a different day, it switches to being the other way around. It seems a bit like my turkey calls in the sense that some elk/turkeys like one thing one day and a different thing the next, so I like to have more options at my disposal. I occasionally will use the bite style of calls, but you can put a lot more variation and personality into an open reed call, and that's why I tend to prefer them.

I really like the sound of Rocky Mountain elk calls but they would freeze up or get sticky and make a horrible sound during the most critical times. I recently switched to Phelps EZ estrus game call and haven't had any issues since.

Carlton fighting cow call is my favorite I use it archery hunting all the time. best 10 dollars you can spend and if your like me you'll lose one a season so you cant beat the price. Phelps calls makes some good ones to but they are a little more money.

The last two posts touch on the key point. I've not had much luck with the Carltons Fightn Cow Call, yet I've a friend who could call a bull out of your backyard with one. Seriously, he could get bulls to bugle all summer and into December. He thought my call sounded the same, but the elk picked out a difference. Try several until you find what you are good with AND that the elk respond to. As stated earlier, they are like fish and tackle. They'll go for one thing one day, and ignore it and go for something else another.

I use Wapiti River Outdoors calls. I have one reed that is my go to, so I carry 4 or 5 of them.....
Sometimes I get wrapped up in the moment and lose a few ;)

I still use a Mossback "Widow Maker" very effectively, and it's name tells the truth!
