This buck was shot by my grandfather in thge 60's just south of Baggs WY near Slater Creek in Colorado. He has a few on the wall comparable to this one, and a pile in the barn that are'nt much smaller. I would like to find a buck of his that could possibly book and get it officially scored before he is gone. He's 81 now.Give me a ball park score.

Can A Buck this old be officially scored and entered in the b7c records?

"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

That will gross in the upper 190s. Net would probably be mid 180s. It's a record book deer.

Hardway asked; "Can A Buck this old be officially scored and entered in the b7c records?"

Yes, if he was a Blacktail, you'd be in no trouble.

As it is, IMO, not quite close enough to book and the extras don't help your quest. i'm guessing mid 180's gross. Heck of a mulie that anyone would be proud to take.

Suggestion; If none of the bigs racks make book, very few do, buy a cape and take one of those big ol racks to the taxidermist and have it mounted/restored for a present to your elder. I'll bet that would make him happy! It would me!

338shooter sais; " Net would probably be mid 180s. It's a record book deer."

lol, How so? you can't make the Boone & Crokette Book with a mulie netting mid 180's

Joey,
I thought 180 was min for mule deer?

"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

Hey guys, I might be well off on this! Last i read the minimum for typical was 190, down from 195 that it took back when i used to score a lot of bucks. I'll double check, think i'm right, but maybe...?

Ok, let me eat crow, rare please.

Aparently there is an awards book put out by Boone and Crockett along with their Bible, Records of North American Big Game. 2 Books! It takes 180 net to make the Awards Book. It takes 190 to make the Awards book and the Records of North american Big Game Book.

I was not aware of this "Awards book". Now that i am i know many guys that now have Booner bucks, myself included. I have always when talked about "the book" meaning the "Records Book"

338, my apoligies to you sir!

Joey, I just checked the B&C website and the min is now 180. But I think on a buck this old they may use the minimum of the period it was taken. Not sure on that though. Anyways I've been draggin my feet for a few years on this. He has 2 muleys on the wall in his office that are a little better and a blacktail that I think will go 160 and definatley book. I need to get down there and take a few pics so you guys can see and get the ball rolling.

"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

B&C minimum for the awards program is 180, 190 for the all time book.

That buck is a good one but would be lucky to net 165. MMers have a way of greatly exagerating REAL scores.

Go ahead and let me have it for the low ball....then bring it over and I'll put an official score to it. I might be wrong.

JB

I'm netting him in the 170's. Nice buck. Wish I had a pile of those in my barn.

LAST EDITED ON May-26-08 AT 09:28PM (MST)[p]I think he would go about 175 Gross

Leave the nets in the boat
Edit: Very Nice Buck Thanks for posting

My guess is 183 gross, but net's all that counts for the book, but who cares, great buck.

Dub

Great looking G-4's! I come up with score that is 175ish. Needs a little more G-3 and quite a bit more MB to get into the book. I wouldn't pass though. I like the advice to find a couple nice ones and have them restored and mounted up on a new cape. Let's see some more of his racks.

Dax

Daxter is right....I love those G-4's. Good looking buck....something to be proud of no matter when it was shot.

Steve

His age definitely would not stop him from going book. I had one scored an entered that was killed in 1933, so that thing is practically brand new! However, he just doesn't have the overall size to net over 190, but I would still shoot him!

Nice buck! Doesn't look to me like he will hit the 180 mark. But what do I know Eastmans says David Longs buck on the cover is 200" and it does not look even close. Pictures do not always do justice.

I think I finally agree with d13r:

Sage, I appreciate the appology, although I don't know that one is really needed. The best and the worst part of MM is people being able to give opinions and thoughts on things. One of the unfortunate items though as that some people make fun of others for those opinions or thoughts...that can be especially unfortunate when people are mis-informed. We all need to make sure that even if we don't agree, we show respect to each other.

I'll stand by my mid 190s gross.

Hardway,

Are you close to clovis? If you're interested in having a couple scored to give you an idea, PM me and I'll give you a name and number of a guy there to score them for you.

JB

JB, I'm about 100mi north of fresno. The B&C site says there is a guy in Oakdale, which is only about 20 min away. He's has a pretty good blacktail and a couple other muley's a little better than this one already mounted that I'll be hanging here at home in a few weeks, so when that happens I'll have to see about getting those scored. This one was mainly to give me an idea of what I had. Sad thing is he threw away about 50 sets 10 years or so ago and did'nt tell anyone. he kept about 15 sets that all kind of compare to this one :)

"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

I'd say about 193 Gross. Not a net guy either but just measuring both sides on paper and adding 22 inch spread I come up with 1926/8

I'd guess he'll net low 180's if that.

LAST EDITED ON May-31-08 AT 00:49AM (MST)[p]Scoring the buck yourself is not nearly as hard as some think. Just get a tape and go to B and C or P&Y website and print off a score sheet. The instructions are very clear and you could at least get a basic score to see if it is worth the official scorers time. I think anyone who hunts or cares about scores should go to the website and score a few for practice. If nothing else it will help you see what to look for on a good scoring buck out in the feild. If you do score it let us know what you come up with. Pictures are decieving and there is ONLY ONE WAY TO KNOW THE SCORE. GET A TAPE ON HIM.

Yeah was looking at those big fronts too, he looks like a 180's net even with the weak back fork. If his main beams are 24-25" he could go 190, but they look quite a bit smaller. Score him out yourself, its not too hard, if he's close have him officially scored. You can also take him to fish and game, some guys there will do it for free if they have the time (unofficially) to see where it may stand. There are different "state" records minimums also, not sure what yours is (if you are just looking to get his name in print).

338, Fair enough. I totally agree with what you're saying. I do try to avoid telling someone that they're wrong, especially if i'm the one that's misinformed, lol, because i to see too much of that in these pages. Not sure what got into me to lol at your post, not my usual style, goes to show that i don't know as much as i think i know sometimes... Thanks for letting me off the hook!

Joey

Nice horns but too many deductions, It won't book. Lets see some other pics of your Granspa's kills!!

>180-185.....d13 and TF are smok'n crack
>at 165

You could be right since I haven't actually touched them but how many hearts have you broken doing an "official" score?

Greatest Spread: 27 4/8 inches

Total Deductions: 8 4/8 inches

Final Scores: 194 5/8

Congratulations!

You are above the minimum score for Mule deer.

It was'nt precise by far, I used a taylors type tape to measure him but I think it's close enough to go ahead and find out for sure. Soon as the old lady gets home with the camera I'll upload some more photos tonight.

P.S. I think the wider 1/2" tape added a little but if I followed the directions right like I think I did......I think he's at least mid 180's.

For you pro-internet scorers.....Here's how you measure up. 202 4/8 gross, 191 1/8 net. Had him officially scored and he made it, my gramps will be in the all-time book.

"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

WOW - 202 gross - I first saw this post now and I don't think that anyone guessed him that high - I would't have either. Very cool - like everyone else - I'd like to see more of what gramps has shot - sounds like a pile of horns that could be drooled over for quite a while. Thanks for keeping us posted.

- cough - WOW - Sorry, just spit Diet Mt Dew all over my screen. Is that one of your grandad's too? That buck should make the book as a Non typical don't you think. Wouldn't hurt to have it scored too. If your grandpa has piles of racks like these - it must be the pile to end all piles - let's see some more.

Dont worry about D13er he's always negative when it comes to other peoples animals. In my opinion he's a arrogant know it all. I know I'm a little late on this thread but I figured gross over 190 and leave the net to the fish as well.

Where is your Grandfather located? I would travel a bit to score those for him... You said he has a blacktail so I figure you may be in Oregon. Washington or California..... Your first buck should gross in the 190's and may end up just under the all time book of 190..... But I would love to throw a tape on it...

Hardway, man, i'm tickleed pink to see the score on gramps buck. Just goes to show how hard it is to score a buck from a couple pic's.

I really think it's a great story! Glad to see it have a happy ending!

Joey

Thanks for all the kind words. You guys know how the old timers were, he never gave a rats you know what about a score. Getting these bucks scored is something I always wanted to do but since my gramps was diagnosed with alzheimers it's really motivated me to get it done for him. I'll try and get some more pics up later. Thanks, Ryan

Here's the original field photo from 1963. Funny, They managed to do it without camo, gps, special ultralight this and that. My gramps always said " you got your gun? You got your bullets? You got your knife ? Thats all you need, lets go." :)

That's a great photo of Gramps.. Love those old hunting pics..
Thanks for sharing.

That's great! Life was a lot simpler back then.

What rifle did he use? When did he stop hunting? Did he live near there at the time? We need details!

:)I ask too many questions.

I love those old time photos and stories!

He's shot quite a few rifles over the years, but I think during the 60's his beloved 270 weatherby was the tool of choice for muley's. We've been here in Westley, Modesto area since 57 when he bought the ranch. Before that he and my grandmother were raised on thier parents cattle ranches in Morgan Hill, Ca. Here's the photo of our last hunt in 06 near Craig, Co. He was 80 at the time. He still wants to know when were supposed to send off for our tags, but it's just not safe anymore. Enjoy your time in the field with your family while you can :)
