My Utah Dead Head Pickup 5x spike

I posted this in another thread about dead heads but figured I would start my own thread here.

Well I finally got my elk head back, it took a little longer than I would have liked, about a month and a half, but I am happy other than the fact that they skull capped it so I cant do a European mount with it now.

I found this bull still alive but just barely he couldn't stand and really wouldn't even open his eyes, and would just rock his head from side to side. I called the DWR to see if they could send someone out to put him down, or get permission to do it myself but they wouldn't let me and an officer wasn't going to be able to make it until later that evening. I had to leave him their to die a slow death.

I came back several hours later to check on him and he was dead. The officer didn't make it out to him until well after dark.

Here is a couple more photos, the officer figured he was just a super old bull that got to old to eat as his teeth were really worn down.

Hey JakeH!

That Bull looks to be in the same kinda shape as the Bull I found out there a few years ago!

Poor Bastages Suffering a Slow Death!

Looks like some Fresh Pin Stripes on your Truck!:D

That is a cool find. Kind of crappy it was so sick, but I guess that's nature. The wife and I found a calf elk one year that was on the verge of death. I poked and prodded it, but it wouldn't get up. Finally I lifted it up, and just like that it took off running and calling for mother. Who knows if it survived. Probably not, but don't tell the wife, she likes to believe the coyotes didn't feast on it that night.

Your bull is a neat find.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-09-16 AT 09:33AM (MST)[p]Great find Jake. Glad you were able to recover that rack. Nature can seem cruel to us sometimes, but that's the way it goes. It may have seemed like a slow death, but starvation just kind of puts an organism into a comatose state and though the hunger pangs and thirst are real, the brain numbs things a lot more than we realize. At least he wasn't hamstrung and half eaten alive by some gut-eating coyotes or wolves!

That is exactly the kind of spike that we all hope to find on a spike hunt. Too bad you can't do a euro mount, but there are still a lot of good options for it. A simple wrap and plaque will look cool too.

HOOK 'EM!

That's a giant spike. Glad to hear you got it back. Good to see doing things the right way sometimes works out.

HAHA, Ol'Cat, this poor truck has not had a good life so far, I bought the thing in Sept. and didn't have a 1000 miles on it before my dad decided to drag his dump trailer across the front bumper, Its had run in's with trees and deer, also had a ratchet strap incident that left a mark..... I swear I will never buy a brand new stuck again. haha.

And the stripes just add character at this point lol.

My hunting spot is so secret, not even the elk have found it yet.

That's making the best of a bad situation... Always hard to find animals on the winter range in that state. I'm glad you were able to get the antlers back. He's a unique bull for sure. Friend of mine killed a 6x1 out in the Book Cliffs about 4 years ago. Same configuration as this one. It's a sweet rack.

Good luck this year man.
