Hi all heading to Ashley n forest in flaming gorge Utah area first week of archery season in August. Have to go that week due to teaching school. I'm a novice and any help on areas and tactics would be much appreciated. Tried last year, saw plenty of deer but no elk, lots of cattle in some areas. Not afraid to hike in a few miles.

Go close to the top, try red cloud loop and you will find elk. The deer and cows will be mostly down lower, elk will be higher that time of year

Many thanks for your reply and info.We figured last year would be a good scouting get to know the area trip. We spent a day scouting that area and it did look good. Is it too early for cow calls etc?

I hunt that area every year, Not this year as I just drew the Muzzleloader tag on Wasatch.
The only problem is it has become super popular.
We ran into people no matter where we went last year.
It is like a new town on the mountains with bow hunters these days.
It was a bit nuts. This year should be good however the last week of the hunt as the hunt goes until Sept 16th.
The higher up is a good bet for sure.

I hunted this area for 2 seasons about 5 years ago. Always saw and heard elk. Shot at a couple and missed. I have moved farther away, but constantly dream of wanting to get back there. I usually go the last week of the archery hunt. Prior obligations might make it so I can't go this year, but maybe next. If you want me to show you around sometime send me a PM. Good luck.
