LAST EDITED ON Jun-11-08 AT 09:49PM (MST)[p]Hey the general rifle deer season is approaching fast and I am looking for any help I can get in unit 39. I know its a big area, but I am looking for areas where there are fews road. I am willing to walk and just have not been successful in past years scouting up around arrowrock. I possibly wasnt going high enough, but then again I dont know. Any help to lead me in a general direction would be great!
P.S. Go ahead and email me or send me a personal message if you have any information. Thank you.

If your bow hunting up around arrowrock. You are in the right area. It's migration season and they are definately there. Go higher, they usually travel in the upper third of the mountains.
Be patient and you will see some good bucks.

you could also look at just about any map and see where to get away from the roads. there are several locked gates as well. first step, get some good maps.

agree with htnfool too. archery season, the front from boise to mountain home. most will have migrated by then.

I know it's a big area, but there are deer (bucks) up high. Get at timberline above Atlanta and up the Queen's River areas.

They do live there.

Alright thanks for the help. I meant do direct this forum for rifle, but I do archery hunt up there as well if I am not successful so thanks for the information.

nd bow hunter I am from nd. going to unit 39 rifle tag this year. pm please have a few questions

Get online & order some GOOD maps like the IDL GIS maps for Idaho, get an ONX chip as well. 39 is a HUGE unit & you will find out getting away from the roads is an easy thing to do !! It's the getting away from the thousands of other hunters that is the issue, On a positive note there are some Damn good bucks in 39 & the number of hunters since 2020 has dropped as well. Any open trail for horses or trail bikes will be Well used, last time I hunted 39 we were 3 miles from the closest road at daylight it was a sea of orange !!!

Which area did you go to that there was a sea of orange. So I don’t go that way?

I was up out of Atlanta, but its the same story all across the unit more hunters than deer, really bad on the 43/39 border & up the Middle Fork road. If you already have the tag pick a spot & hope for the best !! This unit has a lot of migrating bucks but need snow & a few solid freezes to start them moving

True but I can speak to 39,43 etc. that’s where I be spent most my general seasons. These days 39 is just…gross.
I used to hunt the last 2 weeks of the season in 43, we hiked in close to 2 miles in some Nasty country . It was nothing to see 30 + deer hiking in, the last few times in the same drainage same distance Never saw a deer in fact we saw less than 40 deer the entire hunt !! Pretty sad when you see more rigs parked along the road than you do deer in the hills
