Late August elk hunting

I drew a cow muzzle loader tag for August 16-31, here in NV. I am fairly familiar with the unit but have never hunted elk at this time.

How will the elk be acting during this time? Will it be more like hunting deer? Ones, twos and threes of elk? Will the bulls be in smaller groups just starting to spar?

Just trying to figure out a strategy. I have a pretty good idea of where I plan to hunt.

Thanks

I hunted elk in utah last year the end of august. The animals in that area were on high alert, but the bulls were starting to hang with the cows and even starting to bugle a little bit. We never saw any sparing but figured they were starting to gather and feel each other out. The cows were running in herds (15 +). Good luck.

Expect the elk to still be in their summer mode, with good size nursery herds. You probably won't find many mature bulls with them, and don't expect to hear any bugling.
Elk are generally quite easy to hunt at this time of the year. Cover ground until you find the elk. They aren't scattered everywhere, but will often be in their high, summer pastures.
