New Mexico Unit 2b archery Jan

Hello Ranger21,
Myself and my nephew also drew this tag so I also am looking for any helpful hints specific to the area. Not looking for anyones secret spot but just info to narrow the search a bit. Is it worth scouting or is is so migration dependent that my scouting trip this summer should be just to get a feel for the area? I will be traveling down from Spokane Wa for the hunt.
Also, not looking for any hunting tips as we think we already know how to glass, get away from roads, etc...
Thanks in advance for any info anyone is willing to share.
Mike

I live about two hours from the unit so I will be over scouting. I have hunted rifle in 2a so I will tell you what I do know which in not much. This area if similiar to 2a will have lots of roads because of the natural gas wells. I have been told it is completely different this time of year because of migration and big bucks are moving around getting ready for the rut. If I get any information I will let you know and when you come down for scouting if you want feel free to contact me.

You guys drew my tag. Bring chains for all wheels. Prepare for terrible weather and hunting conditions. Lots of road hunters. Hike in past locked gates if you want to hunt undisturbed deer. If there is old snow on the ground, find feeding areas and hunt out of a ground blind or tree stand (if you can handle the cold). Good luck. Ed F

Oh yeah, first week is best, it's the tail end of the rut. Not sure on the migration. I've drawn it twice and both time was told "should have been here last year". One foot of old crusty snow on the ground. I have been told that it takes a really good snow in Colorado to get the numbers up in the unit. Hope this helps. Ed F

My cousin and I hunted it two years ago. I agree with everything BOWUNTR said. Search the archives for previous posts and you will find a lot of information. There are a lot of deer there during that hunt. Lots of little bucks (2 and 3 pointers) and the potential for a real pig.

What was interesting was that we expected to see lots of 20" 4x4's running around but that whole age class of bucks seemed to be missing. My cousin ended up shooting a 14" 2x3 and I came home empty handed. The crusty snow and open flats make it a very difficult hunt. The deer pick you off at 400 yards as soon as you start your stalk due to the noise of the crunchy snow. I think you would be better off without any snow to allow spot and stalk hunting. I think this is why there are a lot of road hunters. I believe you have a better chance of killing a big buck next to the road as the deer seem to be used to all the truck traffic and there are so many roads in the unit.

Good luck!

We drew this hunt last year. My partner and I were 100%. The hunt took us 10 days but it was a blast. My partner shot a nice 3x3 and I was lucky enough to take a 26" 5x6 which will score around 175.
The weather was in the single digits in the mornings to mid 40 in the afternoons. It rained and we got about 8" of snow mid way through the hunt. The roads can be a mess and look out for all the oil field trucks! TON OF DEER!!!
We set ground blinds and tree stands which we hunted every evening and most mornings. Walk in behind the locked gates and get ready for the fun!
I put in for it this year but no luck, Drew Unit 34.

Good Luck, John
