I posted this in the archery section as well but just curious.
Hey just curious has anyone hunted mule deer out of a tree stand before. I want to get serious and do it this year and was just curious if their are any tricks i should know about. I am planning on getting a ladder stand just curious about how high. I'm trying to decide between a 21' and 16' do i need the extra height?
I found an area that holds a lot of deer during the hunt with some trails used to travel between water and bedding areas I wanted to set up on is this a good idea? anyway any suggestions or hints would be goud thanks in advance!!!!!!!

I agree you can't fix stupid!!! Great tag line..

I have hunted out of 3 different muley tree stands over water holes. None were more than 10' off the ground, but were well camoed. All produced deer in eves. The wind was right in the eves and the deer came in like they always did all summer. IMHO if you have a good water hole, a muley is relatively easy to harvest the first part of archery season, due to their habitual nature. I don't feel tree stand height is as important with muleys as it is with whiteys...

Hope I helped and good luck...

GO HARD KORE OR DON'T GO AT ALL

The 16' will be fine. Tree stands are very effective for muleys and an underrated tool for hunting out west.

I have hunted deer and elk from stands no more than 12 ft. high, great hunt for some areas.

hey thanks for the info i'm stoked now i'm going to the the trail camera out and get lookin

LAST EDITED ON Jun-21-08 AT 09:46AM (MST)[p]antlerless i think the 16ft would be fine. i think you need to be down wind of the deer and practice all summer out of the stand you plan to hunt from because your bow shoots different from the higher elevations of a tree stand. If you hunt with your child you will never have to hunt for him -herb parsons

Was just bear hunting and had 3 bucks in velvet come right by my stand within 20' of me and 1 of the 3 will be a shooter this fall. I am 15' high they came from down wind of me so they did not smell me.

16 feet should be enough.
A hang on stand I think would be a better choice, alot more conveinant to pack around.
Setting up right over a waterhole will work too.
