I just drew a non- res early rifle deer tag for the ruby mountains in nevada. I've heard most of the deer are in unit's 101-103. I plan on taking a few trips in July to scout. I was wondering if anybody has some information on these unit's. If there's good access from the bottom of the mountain on the eastside or if it's better to hike the top from the ruby crest trail down and work the canyons. I know the unit's are fairly big but do you run into alot of people on this hunt. Any information would help Thanks Marc

Well there's lots of tags in there! It's hard to get in from the bottom because it's all ranch land and most of them have there nose up there butt! What you said is what I would do "hike the top from the ruby crest trail down and work the canyons." Just get on Goggle Earth and tack a look there's lots of country to hunt. What ever you do stay away from Harrison Pass!!!

Elko's correct, but, not knowing what type of hunt you are about to do, ie backpack, quad, or truck hunting its hard to say where to start. Harrison Pass isn't as bad a it sounds. There is quite a few people there, but they do kill bucks there. Go out and get a Forest Service Map. It will show all the entry points for hunters thru private property. Unit 103 is almost all public, so find water and there will be bucks. If you want to see big bucks go high and look low. This hunt is quite hard if your a backpacker. If you have horses it is allot easier. I drew the same tag as you. Looks like the season will start on a Sunday this year! Not quite use to the new changes in the season dates so be prepared for them. Good luck and shoot a big one!

Mickeyelk thanks for the info. I Plan on taking the lamoille cayon road to the end and hike up to the pass and heading south on the ruby crest trail. I'am going to set up a bviy camp and hunt from it. Do you know if the Lamoille cayon road is open all the way up at that time in Oct and if you can park your truck there for awhile ?. You said you drew the same tag as me good luck and take a good one also ! Thanks Marc

Yes, the canyon road will be open. The hike up and over takes about 3 hours depending on what you haul up with you. The first canyon has some deer but the best will come from the second canyon. It's a long hike and takes about 6 hours. If you have horses its easier, but its still a long hike but worth it. (Allot easier to get the deer out). Last year it snowed pretty good but was gone in a few days. Good luck!!!!
