LAST EDITED ON Jul-29-16 AT 08:49PM (MST)[p]Hello all I've been scouting hard and long and yet to find any elk I drew the elk muzzy tag I knew it'd be hard any info would be so much appreciated dang cell phones oquirrh stansburry

Where have you scouted? PM me if you prefer.

I'm a local and can't believe this is still a LE unit. The bulls are few and far between and are usually in the nastiest areas. The unit doesn't even remotely compare to the other LE elk units I've hunted. I did hear rumor though that they finally shutdown the cow slaughter this year so there may be some improvement in the distant future.

RE: Oquirrh stansburry help please ?

in my opinion, this unit is a waste of any LE elk points. the only elk worth hunting in that unit are on the CWMU, and that takes a truck load of points to draw. i wish they would turn it into a GS any bull unit. if i were you and didnt have any previous knowledge of the unit and where the few elk that are on public ground like to be, i'd turn the tag in, get your points back and draw a tag on a unit where the elk are a little easier to come by. good luck! youll need it. ive hunted the stansburys for 20 years. from north to south and just about everywhere inbetween, and i can count on 2 hands how many bulls ive actually laid eyes on. (7 total). if you are dead set on keeping the tag, id look at the southern part of the oquirrhs (ophir canyon area). thats where i'd start

LAST EDITED ON Aug-02-16 AT 08:55PM (MST)[p]Hey Buccsboy, Im thinking deerkiller must have hacked my PM to you? I swear that is almost word for word identical to what I told you! That's funny.

RE: Oquirrh stansburry help please ?

Hey I did see some bulls this spring! Don't get too excited yet, things will change by the time your hunt rolls around. I'm glad they finally cut the tags back.

RE: Oquirrh stansburry help please ?

For what it's worth...heard of a lot of archers eating tag soup on the archery hunt of this unit.

Good luck. Hope you have lots of time and energy to get up there and get hunting soon.

RE: Oquirrh stansburry help please ?

Ya I have a lot of time up there and ready for the challenge it's really not as bad of unit as everyone s saying if u put in the work and go look for em

So what caliber of bulls do you consider to be worthy of making it "not as bad" of a LE unit? I personally think you should be able to find 300 inch plus bulls everyday and have a possibility of a 350+, this unit is definitely not that. If you like to work your butt off for raghorns it's a great unit. Although there has been a couple really nice bulls killed over the years, they definitely aren't plentiful like almost every other LE unit in the state. Not sure if you've been on any other LE units, but it's a night and day difference in quality.

RE: Oquirrh stansburry help please ?

I have been on other units thank u and yes a 300 in bull is a good bull in this unit I've seen a couple real nice ones close to 350 in I just don't know why people on this site seem to see the negative in almost everything we are hunters and should stick together I think it's more about having fun and the time u spend with your loved ones but most people here seem to think its all about the size of the rack. That's to bad for those who think like that cause u are truly not seeing the big picture I drew this with 1 point so I'm gonna give it my all and make a ton of good memories and see a lot of stuff some people go there whole lives never seeing so enjoy the ride

So in 1 month you went from not seeing any elk to finding elk, and bulls close to 350. Guys on this site help you out, that is great. Good folks here on MM. Good luck.

Yes I have some help yes that I really appreciate but most people just bashing I have worked hard and spent a lot of time in the unit the last month and it has paid off thanks

Apparently you took out of context everything I said and maybe you forgot that I am one that helped you (shortly after you started posting pics of bulls...hmmm...)! How many bulls do you think you would've found by now without tips from other people? And I never said anything about not making memories or having a great time. Anytime hunting is better than working.

One question though: Why not just hunt a general archery area if you don't care about the size of the bull or elk densities since that's what probably 99% of people care about when applying for a LE elk unit? Then you could be building points for a top quality elk, deer or antelope unit and chasing bulls every year.

youve worked hard based on the info people have given you in the first place. in my opinion, the HARD part was already done for you by others. you just took the info people have figured out on their own and it worked somewhat for you. but youve in now way done this on your own

FYI I'm goin in places people have not said anything about on this forum and oh thank u everyone for getting me up at 3 am and paying for my gas and feeding my mules and putting gas in my 4 wheeler and buying my gear and also getting my muzzle loader all sighted in ? I have already told the people who have helped me that I appreciate it very much and have checked out many areas a lot of witch people have mentioned and also PLACES BEALIVE IT OR NOT IVE FOUND ON MY OWN thanks to all that have helped and thanks to all the negative people as well but as far as people doing it for me that is so far from the truth u act like some one has a 350 in bull lassoed to a tree and gave me gps coordinates some people ?

i can guarantee you are full of #####. you didnt see a "couple" close to 350. they are probably closer to 320. you got on here asking for help. you got advice. i dont know what else you are looking for?

If you've found a couple 350" bulls, look no further. I would focus all my time looking for those bulls.

There's not always next year

from a zero who knew nothing about the unit asking for info to a hero who found elk where nobody has ever found them.
don't get me wrong we all need a push in the right direction once in a while but you seem kinda wound up a little tight over this.

dude with your ability to go blind into a unit and turn up multiple 350 bulls over night out of thin air, you could quit your day job and become a full time guide! you could put doyle moss out of business tomorrow with your skills!

what would you charge for your services? ive got a cow tag in january for a unit that im almost positive doesnt have a cow living on it. i could use your talent!

For one it wasn't over night it was many days and long hours on the mountain s if u can't find a cow on the unit u may wanna give up hunting or possibly get your eyes checked

Thank you for every one who has gave me info on this unit I have found elk and I'm not getting in a pissing match with everyone over this personally deer hunter I don't really give a s*** what u or anyone else thinks I have looked into places people have told me about and have found my own spots thanks everyone for the info and the stories sorry if I've came off like a jerk not meaning to with the nice people on here just hate the people who talk s*** behind a keyboard

Been hunting this unit for deer putting in a ton of boot leather. It used to be good but is a very sorry LE elk unit. For the record, after 13 days roaming the hills as far away as one can get from a road, I have seen elk every day. Only 1 I repeat 1 has been mature.

For all you who think I am FULL OF BS. Squander your points on this unit next year and call my bluff. Are there bulls there? Yes. Just not hardly any to choose from.

Hope you can thump a giant. Keep us posted!

Wow- this thread went downhill pretty quick...

Buccsboy55- If you have scouted all summer you may well be the expert on this unit anyway. The tough part with elk is that they can move so far, so fast. I'd say if you have found any bull, you focus on harvesting that bull. With just 1 elk point, you pretty much hit a lottery anyway. There won't be a 400 inch bull there. There are likely not even any 350 inch bulls on that unit. So if you've found a 6-point bull, I think you should be trying to get him.

I know this isn't the kind of help you wanted, but take it for what it's worth. You've had an amazing summer scouting, and hopefully with the rut going on, you'll be able to locate a bull once your hunt starts. I think if you have the time, you should be out there during the rifle hunt as well just to see where any elk might be rutting.

Buccsboy-

Congrats on drawing a LE tag with only 1 point. That LE unit may be struggling but we all know that it is still better than an over the counter tag. It sounds like you have a pretty good attitude about the hunt. You have sought help from other sportsmen and you are also doing your own work and scouting. Hopefully, your efforts will be rewarded with a nice bull. If not, enjoy the experience and time in the hills. Best of luck to you and make sure to post photos when your hunt is over.

apparently you're better at finding 350 bulls in a terrible unit, than you are at sensing sarcasm in a post...

for the record, i have no problems finding elk. i'll be willing to bet i had tagged more elk by my mid 20's than you will in a life time. my eyes work just fine

>I'm not posting pictures till after

thats cuz the pics dont exist...

"close to 350"...? so they are 320 bulls?

Found some smaller bulls( sorry can't tell u where the big ones are) if any rifle hunters need help on this unit I'm willing to share

Buccsboy congrats on your hunt. I live right by this unit. And watch these elk on a weekly basis especially during the winter. And yes there are a few bulls that would score in the 330 - 350 range i think alot of them hide on kennecott but is what it is. Deer killer you are coming off as an idiot in this thread get over it the guy is finding elk on his own and with help why are you obsessed . Good luck on your hunt buccsboy

Ouch. 20 points. I have to imagine that person accidentally clicked on the wrong choice in their application. Hope they were able to turn the tag back in and get their points back.

I'm hoping that was the case! Could you imagine thinking you had put in for the San Juan, Beaver or one of the other truly premium LE tags only to get results back saying that had successfully drawn the Oquirrh/Stansbury with 20 points?

Not to my knowledge, I don't know of anywhere that the DWR summarizes tags that were turned in. Although when I came across this I was curious to see the particulars about turning in a tag, and the state doesn't return the bonus points, only monetary compensation unless there is a valid medical excuse. I hope he has a friend who is a doctor

They always will return your points as long as the tag is returned before the start of the hunt. You need a medical excuse to get a refund if you return the tag after 30 days before the hunt starts
