looks like i will be hunting paunsaugunt with a muzzleloader this year. does anyone have any pics of bucks from this area or and info about this hunt?

I was on that hunt in '97 and I drew in '99. The difference in those 2 years was unreal. Saw 1/2 the bucks and they were on average smaller. The biggest we saw in '97 was well over 200". I shot the biggest I saw in '99 and it was just under 180". From what I've heard, it's even worse now. I don't mean to get you down, if you see a 180 buck, let the lead fly. Good luck.

Max-

Congratulations on the tag. I also will be hunting with my muzzleloader on the Pauns this year. I would be happy to speak with you sometime. Send me a pm.

It can be hit or miss especially if you don't know the area. I have herd of people going down there and killing a good one and I have herd of people getting skunked. If you see 180 buck on any Utah unit I would say let the lead fly.

Archery is a year round commitment!!

We drew out for archery a few years ago(my dad, BIL, myself) we went 3 for three, but my BIL's buck was by far the best.

We did see quite a few really nice bucks, only one we figured was over 30" but we thought him over 200 green.
Having talked with quite a few that have drawn in the last few years, the Muzzy and rifle can be a hit/miss, with the thought being the deer may have started moving off the top and south.

I helped on a Hunt 2 years ago. Scouting was a blast during the summer, but the deer WILL NOT BE ON TOP during the muzzy hunt. There will a few ontop during the rifle, but they will start to move south by Oct 1. WE killed a good buck by scootam paw (? spelling) just off and south from the top. We saw a few giants, but could not seal the deal. Good LUCK!!

LAST EDITED ON Jun-26-08 AT 07:41AM (MST)[p]Here is the buck I shot during the rifle hunt in 2006. I saw bigger bucks but ended up shooting this deer on the fifth day. Robiland helped me during my hunt.

I Killed this buck 2 year ago on the rifle hunt. I am the last of my family to finally draw this tag and have hunted with 6 tags in the last decade or so. I am not from there but know a few things about the mountain PM if you want and I will tell you what I know.

I am shooting a Pine Ridge 1X scope. You cannot have anything stronger than 1 power here in Utah. How about you? What setup are you shooting?

I noticed Don Mecham was muzzloader hunting on the Paunsaugunt on last week's Trail of Sportsman. Don saw lots of good bucks and shot a 30"+ 4x4. That was a great episode. Does anyone know how long ago Don hunted that unit? It looked to me like the hunt occurred several years ago.

I know they both ate tag soup on the Paunsaugunt rifle hunt in 2005. This, however, was a muzzleloader hunt. Does anybody know what year Don hunted the Paunsaugunt muzzleloader? That was a great episode.

I think Don's boy had the muzzleloader tag . The hunt was in 05 or 06. I remember seeing them in town. Im still trying to figure out where they were hunting a seep 50 miles from the nearest blacktop road. Guess it wasnt as the crow flys.
