This weekend while scouting for elk we ran across something disturbing. One evening we spotted a small three point buck as the deer turned to leave I noticed something blue and white seemingly following him. As we got a little closer my fears came true. The buck had a carbon arrow sticking out of his left hip. It was obvious the arrow had been shot within a short time period and more than likely was from a field tip.

Some people make me sick! We kept our eyes open for archery gear in camps and I've contacted the fish and game, but I'm guessing the culprit will go unpunished.

It never ceases to amaze me how stupid a few people can be!

That pisses me off!!!

I wish there was a law that your name and number was on every arrow. Most of these messes would go away.

Im not even gonna look and see i already know your from tardville cause thats where this sort of thing happens! what a dirtball

Bury me in the hills so i can fertilize the grass and grow bigger animals for the rest of ya

REALLY!So if I find your lost arrow in the woods, drive into
Yellowstone and stick it in a Big Horn sheep, you'll be
ok with that?
Fewer laws and govt. involvement can be a good thing!

Manufacturers could put lot numbers on each arrow.

Then when something stupid like this is discovered authorities would stand a better chance of tracking down who owned the arrow.

But then, like mentioned above, a whole new bag of complications could arise.

?Here?s to the hero's that Git-R-Done!!?

Do you guys really think anyone willing to poach is going to comply with arrow identification? Kind of like saying registering guns will take them out of criminals hands. That kind of thing only hurts those who are honest.

Don't miss! You are cresting an unlikely situation. There has to be something that can be doen that would minimize this type of problem. Nothing will eliminate it completely, because there are people out there who just don't care. But it could make some others think twice.

I'll be out bowhunting this weekend!

My blacktail archery season is among the earliest in the country.

The good thing?
It's hunting season boys!
:)
The bad thing?
It's noon and 103 degrees.

The military has been using this process for years. There is not a single military munition that does not have a lot number assigned. You can track a crate of ammo from the manufacturer through all the ammo supply points all the way down to the using unit and the range that unit expended the ammo on. In the end if an issue arises you can narrow down the use of that ammo from hundreds of thousand of Soldiers down to a company sized element; making an investigation a lot easier.

Is this realistic on the civilian side on arrows, probably not. We know from many different arenas that criminals are crafty animals but they are rarely smart about it. But IMO this process could impact the investigation into a poaching incident that was mentioned earlier in a positive way.

I don't see this being an option for civilians unless you incorporated alot of new gun and ammunition laws into place. Some of you guys seem to forget that criminals don't abide by the law in the first place. If that is put in place you will have to make sure that someone stays back at camp on every hunting trip because some poacher is going to come by and still your arrows so he doesn't get caught. I'm sorry but I don't see these laws working.

as tough as game laws are these days you would think that people would be scared to do such a stupid thing. check out the colorado poaching fines on there web site.cdow aint playing!!! probably some stupid kids but still a sad thing. what a waste.

Crap like this is what gives all hunters a bad name, granted it wasn't a hunter but a idiot who shot the thing, but to the general public another black mark against bowhunters.

Wow reading some of these post's is amazing, some of you have hit the nail right on the head....putting numbers or other identifying information on an arrow is not going to solve the problem. As a Law Enforcement officer I get to see everyday what people are capable above, yeah we have laws in this country with some what stiff penalties, but truth is, human beings are going to continue to be human beings. I think the best qoute i read was the one about "gun control laws", that is so freaking true, our government is making it harder for normal law abiding citizens to purchase a firearm, where as any would be criminal can get what they want.

Truth of the matter is these things are going to continue to happen, is it sad of course it is, but lets face it...nothing is going to stop it. Too many criminals and not enough enforcement officers out there. I have a lot of respect for officers working for any states game wardens. These guys go out and do a job, where everyone has a weapon on them and they cover a large area.

Poachers are deffinately the worst of the worst, for not only do they break the law, but they also waste a resource, for lets face it, its only the horns their after. I wish i knew of a solution to this problem, but i dont. In closing I do feel that our game laws are pretty easy, for most are misdemenaors and criminals that are caught rarely see any jail time. I say chop their shooting hand off and lets see if this will help curb would be thieves. Bottom line is lets just continue to do what we can to assist the law enforcement officers that work and help protect our passion and maybe we can just cherish the victories when law enforcement does catch individuals poaching our sport. JMO.

If the idiot lives in the area LE should be able to track him down. I bet if LE found the animal and put it down and recovered the arrow, they probably could get pretty close if not catch the SOB, especialy if the arrows were bought at a local shop.

I know of a incident where a idoit shot a dog and the arrow was still in the dog when it ran home. LE and a VET, did some homework and caught the guy who shot the dog.

Idiocy!
just like making new gun laws.

lets TRY to enforce the laws we already have, then adjust as needed.

if a criminal will file off the serial # of a firearm they would just as easily remove the # on the arrow.

not to defend a poacher, but i have killed a buck on a rifle hunt that had an arrow in him. it was calcified and covered in fat like a war wound will heal. defiantly at least one year, probably 2.

don't know if this is the case, but it is possible.

and i don't know about you, but i bow hunt and camp, i have been camping many times this year, i always take my bow and targets.

by your post i am guilty, nice.

just a thought.

The problem is when a wildlife officer does collect enough evidence to severly punnish a poacher, They go to court and some liberal judge lets the POS off with a slap on the hand because its the poachers that give the hunters a bad name, and for the liberals the hunters are enemy #1. I think there needs to be a different court for poachers, a pannel of 12 hunters randomly picked like jury duty but if found guilty no probation no loss of hunting privilages for a few years. Depending on what the case is 1 doe or cow for meat, just charge them for a tag, 1 trophy buck or bull, loss of hunting privilages for 10 years, more than one trophy buck or bull, loss of hunting privilages for life.
