hello all
I'am new here and to hunting mule deer, this year I got a tag for unit #30 in southern New Mexico during muzzleloader season and need a little help. I don't know where to start hunting or which location is best in unit 30. Iam not looking for trohpys just to have a good time and try to see some bucks.what would be the best place for entering public lands.
thanks in advance.

George,
We have done some hunting in unit 30. Did not check the dates you were going but we have hunted down in the Queen area. We usually hunt on the rim road 67. We have hunted three different areas there. First one is probably a 1/2 mile as your turn onto the 67 road going back north off the highway there. There is a road that turns to the left and goes by a dried up tank area. The road goes on up to the rim. We hunt up along the rim. It has been 4 or so years since we have been there. But, there were deer there. Didn't see any real big ones but according to the warden at that time, several muzzleloader hunters had some decent luck there. There is some private land a little futher north along the road so, you should maybe get a BLM map and study it. They have them in Carlsbad at the regional office, east of town there on 180. The second place was futher north in the Powers Ridge area. We have taken deer there in some of those canyons and draws just south of Powers Ridge. We drawed unit 34 " our first choice" but unit 30 was our second choice in the areas described. The third area is in between the two mentioned, north of the Cattlemen's Association area. There are some draws a good mile or two off the 67 road to the east. Doing some scouting a day or two beforehand can help locate where they may be. Hope this helps. Have a good hunt.
